That is the tragic situation of Ms. Dang Thi Van (34 years old, residing in Long An B hamlet, Cai Tac town, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang). From a woman with a happy family, Ms. Van continuously suffered a lot of mental and physical pain.
Ms. Van's family has lacked laughter since she fell ill.
Compared to the ID photo taken in August 2021, no one would think that the skinny, pale woman lying on the bed and the one in the photo are the same person. Pointing at the photo, Ms. Van sadly said: "Before, I weighed 46-47kg, and my face was also very round. Since I got sick, I have become like this."
Sick widow begs to live to earn money to raise 2 children (Clip: Bao Ky).
The Widow's Pain
In 2000, through acquaintance, Ms. Van married a young man who worked at the same company. A year later, she gave birth to her first daughter, Nguyen Thi Hong Ngan (now 13 years old). Three years later, the couple had a son, Nguyen Quoc Kiet (10 years old).
Hong Ngan is in grade 7 at Cai Tac town middle school, and Quoc Kiet is in grade 4 at Cai Tac town primary school.
Ms. Van's ups and downs began about 10 years ago, when Quoc Kiet was over 20 months old and just learning to walk, her husband suddenly passed away due to a serious illness.
Her husband's death left her in pain and wanting to give up everything, but looking into the innocent eyes of her children, she decided to stand up and "live again from the beginning". At this time, the widow's motivation was her children.
"At that time, the children were too young to feel the pain. Sometimes, the older child would ask 'Why isn't dad coming home?', and the youngest child would cry every night, mumbling 'daddy'... At those times, I couldn't help but hug and comfort my children," Ms. Van said in tears.
Only a few months after being diagnosed with the disease, Ms. Van has lost a lot of weight. Her body has many itchy scabies due to the medication she takes.
Since her husband passed away, Ms. Van has been busy with all sorts of things. Sometimes she works as a waitress at a restaurant, sometimes she sells vegetables in the market in the rain and sun. She said that she doesn't earn much money, so she has to work day and night until she is exhausted to take care of her two children.
Because she loved her grandchildren, Ms. Vo Thi Khoa (65 years old, Van's biological mother) brought her and her children back home to take care of them. With the grandmother taking care of the grandchildren, Van could go to work and earn money to raise her children.
"I'm already an orphan, now I'm an orphan, it's so miserable"
The misfortune still did not let go of the unfortunate woman. At the end of 2022, because she felt tired, she went to the hospital for a health check. After doing tests, the doctor diagnosed Ms. Van with tuberculosis, toxic liver, gastritis and duodenitis. The tormenting diseases made her body increasingly exhausted, she vomited every time she ate. Since then, she could not do heavy work, all her daily activities depended on her mother.
Mrs. Khoa said that her daughter has health insurance so she can save some money on medicine, but there are still imported medicines that cost money. She has to have blood tests every now and then, but her condition is still not very good.
"I treated my daughter with both Western and Eastern medicine, now I'm combining traditional herbal medicine for her to drink. Seeing my daughter lose weight every day, her body is so skinny, I feel so helpless," Mrs. Khoa sighed looking at her daughter.
Ms. Van has difficulty walking and needs someone to help her.
Mrs. Khoa's husband is old and has cataracts so he cannot work. Although she has a vestibular disorder that causes frequent dizziness, she still works hard. For the past few months, she has been able to get a job washing dishes at a nearby restaurant. In the afternoon, when she comes home, she goes to the garden to pick wild vegetables to sell at the market.
"I have a lot of work but my income is not worth much compared to the money for my child's medicine, the family's living expenses and the schooling of my two grandchildren. I just wish I had the money to cure my child so he could be healthy enough to raise his children and send them to school," Ms. Khoa confided.
Single mothers are only afraid that their children will suffer from being orphans in the future.
Ms. Van confided: "I am not afraid of death, but I am afraid that when I am no longer here, who will take care of my children? They are already orphans, now they have lost their mother, it will be even more miserable", the unfortunate woman burst into tears.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Son Ngoc Hien - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Cai Tac town said that Ms. Van's family is a near-poor household in the locality, in very difficult circumstances and needs help from the community.
"There are 5 people in the family but no one is the main breadwinner. All expenses depend on the 65-year-old grandmother. Every year we give the family members health insurance cards, and on holidays and Tet we also give them gifts, but we are not able to help Ms. Van cure her illness. We hope that benefactors will support and help so that Ms. Van's family has more support to overcome difficulties," Mr. Hien expressed.
