According to information from 9to5Google , this feature is being rolled out as Google promised earlier this year to allow Google Maps to warn users about speed cameras, accidents, and other hazards while traveling.
Warning screen appears on Google Maps
Only some Google Maps users get the new feature
A Reddit user named Truckin_18 recently discovered the feature when he received a “Police Alert Ahead” alert while using Google Maps. The alert appears at the bottom of the screen and is sent by a “Waze driver,” and includes the question “Are they still there?” with “Yes” and “No” buttons for the user to quickly respond.
Waze has announced that the integration will start with police alerts, but will expand to other types of incident reports in the future. The company notes that this is part of a partnership with Google Geo to provide comprehensive, real-time mapping data to users.
This feature is part of an effort to improve crash reporting in Google Maps. Google has begun rolling out a new crash reporting interface across multiple platforms. The rollout is ongoing. So far, only a small number of users have reported seeing Waze alerts in Google Maps. Google has not confirmed the details of the rollout at this time.
