Google has signed agreements to purchase more than 700 MW of renewable electricity from European suppliers in the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Belgium. According to the company's forecast, thanks to the signed agreements, Google will be able to use carbon-free energy to meet about 85-90% of the consumption needs of its data centers and offices in these countries in the next few years.
In the Netherlands, Google is participating in a major offshore wind project. Thanks to a power purchase agreement signed with Crosswind & Ecowende (a joint venture between Shell and Eneco), Google will receive 478 MW of wind power from two new offshore wind farms, HKN V and HKW VI. Together with the renewable energy purchase agreements previously signed in the Netherlands, the new agreement will cover more than 90% of the energy needs of Google’s data centers and offices in the Netherlands by early 2024.
In Italy, the company has signed its first long-term agreement with ERG Energy, under which Google will support the project and receive 47 MW of energy from an onshore wind farm. Google predicts that once in place, the agreement will enable its Italian offices, as well as its cloud data centers in Milan and Turin, to be powered by more than 90% of their energy consumption by 2025.
In Poland, Google has signed two additional agreements to purchase 106 MW of solar power with GoldenPeaks Capital. Together with an October 2023 agreement with Polsat Plus Group to purchase 50 MW of power from the Przybow wind farm, the new agreements will help Google reach its goal of using more than 90% of its energy needs in Poland from carbon-free sources by 2025.
In Belgium, Google has signed two new agreements for the purchase and use of clean energy. The company will buy energy from a new 84 MW onshore wind farm developed by Aspiravi and Luminus. This will help Google’s offices and data centers in the country meet 85% of their energy needs with carbon-free energy by 2024.
The agreements are part of the company's commitment to accelerate the decarbonization of the world's energy systems, a Google representative said. Google's core focus is to meet 100% of its data centers and offices' energy needs with carbon-free energy by 2030.
