The new technology, called Duet AI, which has a monthly subscription fee similar to Microsoft's Copilot, will officially launch in the first half of 2024. Currently, both Google and Microsoft are in a race to integrate generative AI into core products after the launch of the ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022.
Google says companies can try the new feature for free before signing up for a subscription. Aparna Pappu, vice president of Google Workspace, says there is no pricing for smaller businesses or individual users yet.
“The price we set takes into account the willingness to pay for the business value that the new technology brings,” Aparna said.
Google gets most of its revenue from Internet search and online advertising, unlike Microsoft which relies on its software business. However, both have a portfolio of work in cloud computing.
Workspace now has 10 million paying customers, up from 9 million in March and 6 million in 2020. Google said more than a million people have tried new AI features through its “trusted-tester” program since early 2023.
With the paid feature on Gmail and Google Docs, users can enter simple text prompts for the AI to return results. With Google Slides, the AI can create images with a few text descriptions. Duet AI can also create projects in Google Sheets and take notes for those who can't join a video call in Google Meet.
Similar features were also introduced by Microsoft with the Copilot service and opened an early access program for about 600 customers in May 2023.
