Late last year, rumors emerged that Google was planning to merge ChromeOS with Android. At the time, the source said the search giant would embark on a “multi-year project to completely transition ChromeOS to Android.” Now, a senior Google executive has confirmed the move.

Specifically, Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, asked Lance Ulanoff from TechRadar why he uses a MacBook Pro, Apple Watch and iPhone to find out how, why and most importantly, what applications he uses to manage these devices. After that, he surprisingly confirmed that in the future, Google will merge ChromeOS and Android into one.
“I asked because we’re going to combine ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I’m very interested in how people use laptops today and what they’re doing,” Samat said.

There are still many questions to answer at this point, but Samat's question to Ulanoff suggests that Google is looking to improve the cross-device experience on the merged ChromeOS-Android platform.
Google announced in early 2024 that it would merge parts of the Android kernel into ChromeOS to integrate AI faster. It seems likely that the company will continue to build on this integration and completely merge ChromeOS into Android.
If it does, we could eventually see Google ship Chromebooks running this unified operating system, with better compatibility with Android apps and deeper integration with Android phones. Stay tuned.
