At 10:15 a.m. on September 4, Professor, Doctor, Doctor Van Tan, former Deputy Director of Binh Dan Hospital (HCMC), passed away at the age of 92. His passing has left generations of students feeling a sense of loss and regret for a doctor who devoted his life to his students and was attentive to his patients.
Dedicated to the profession
Sharing with reporters of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper on the afternoon of September 4, Professor, Doctor, Doctor Le Quang Nghia, former Deputy Director of Binh Dan Hospital, said that it was a sad day not only for him but also for all the employees of Binh Dan Hospital.
"More than 48 years ago, when I was just entering my residency, Professor Van Tan was already the Head of the Department of Surgery at Binh Dan Hospital. I learned a lot from him. He was not only a good doctor with a good hand, but also dedicated to his profession, colleagues, and students. Day or night, as long as his juniors invited him to consult on difficult emergency cases, he would never refuse," said Dr. Nghia.

According to Dr. Nghia, Professor Van Tan is a person who loves scientific research. He has written about almost every topic of surgery. Regarding abdominal aortic aneurysm, Professor Van Tan is the number 1 person in Vietnam with the most surgeries in the country.

"I still remember in detail many life-threatening cases that he saved and I cannot count all the cases that he performed surgery on. With every patient, he was always dedicated and thoughtful in treatment" - Dr. Nghia said.
Ms. Tran Bich Van, director of General Department 3 of Binh Dan Hospital, confided that she still cannot forget the image of a compassionate doctor who was always devoted to his patients. This is also the feeling of Ms. Ngo Thi Kim Hoan, a nurse - who has been working at Binh Dan Hospital for 25 years. Ms. Hoan shared that the teacher was an exemplary and kind person and hoped that when her child studies medicine in the future, he will follow his example.
Medical ethics
When mentioning Professor Van Tan, Dr. Lam Van Nut, Head of the Vascular Pathology Department at Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC), we always remember the image of a knowledgeable but very simple teacher. "He is a highly qualified person, very dedicated to his profession; enthusiastic and passionate about his students. Even though he has undergone thousands of surgeries, before the surgery, he is very thorough, methodical and tidy. For example, just knowing that there is a surgery the next day, he will grasp the work of each person in the team such as anesthesiologist, surgeon, nurse..." - Dr. Nut shared.
Doctor Nut said that in March 2023, he and some colleagues visited Professor Van Tan. Although he was sick, just hearing his students come to visit and talk about his profession made him feel much brighter.
"My love for my profession has never faded. I can sit and passionately share about my profession with my students. At that time, I am happy when my concerns about vascular diseases are removed. Because the vascular specialty is increasingly developing, helping patients to be less severe after surgery, and the treatment is more effective" - Doctor Nut said.
According to Dr. Nut, Professor, Doctor, Doctor Van Tan is not only a teacher of many generations of doctors in terms of expertise but also a role model of dedication to the profession and to patients. "Not only me but many generations of students will always consider him as a role model to learn from, constantly improve and develop towards the ultimate goal of curing diseases and saving lives" - Dr. Nut confided.
The coffin of Professor, Doctor, Doctor Van Tan is located at 99, Street 19, Hiep Binh Chanh Ward, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. The funeral will take place at 6:30 p.m. on September 4.
Visitation from 7:30 p.m. September 4 to 5:00 a.m. September 7. Burial at 6:00 a.m. September 7. Cremation at Hoa Lac Vien - Sala Garden Cemetery (Tan Hiep, Long Thanh, Dong Nai ).
