Recently, the story of a Thai man losing 30,000 baht in cash (equivalent to more than 20 million VND) after depositing money at an automated teller machine (ATM) in a shopping mall in the Thai capital Bangkok has attracted public attention.
While some people said the man made a basic mistake, putting himself in an awkward situation, others criticized a greedy couple as the cause of the trouble.
Man makes elementary mistake when depositing money at ATM, shocked when watching security camera
According to The Thaiger, a Thai tour guide named Ter is seeking support from the non-profit organization Saimai Survive after the loss occurred at around 4pm on Monday, June 10. Ter told the organization and the media that he deposited 30,000 baht in cash into an ATM outside a bank in a shopping mall in the capital Bangkok.
Ter followed the deposit procedure as instructed on the ATM and placed 30,000 baht (30 banknotes) into the cash slot. The slot closed and the machine started counting the money. Ter thought the deposit was complete and left the ATM. The entire process was recorded by the ATM's security camera.
Mr. Ter put 30 bills in the slot and the machine started counting the money.
Unfortunately, Ter did not receive the usual SMS confirmation from the bank at that time. Five minutes later, Ter returned to the bank to ask the staff about the issue. Initially, the staff confirmed that it was probably an SMS error and that the money would be deposited into his account as usual. Ter asked the staff to clarify the steps for depositing money on the ATM, but he realized that he had not completed the last step. After the machine counted the money, Ter was asked to confirm the amount of cash, but he did not do so.
A couple went to an ATM and saw the money in the cash slot.
The bank employee assured Ter that other bank customers would not be able to take his cash because the storage slot had a sensor that prevented users from taking the money. Ter asked the bank to check the security cameras at the ATM and discovered that a couple who used the ATM after him had stolen the money.
CCTV footage shows the couple looking stunned after seeing Ter’s money in the slot. They looked around to see if anyone was watching. When they saw no one was watching, the woman put Ter’s money in her bag. They stayed at the ATM for a while before leaving with the money.
The woman looked around and then took Mr. Ter's money and put it in her pocket.
The bank denied responsibility because it said the mistake was on the customer's side.
According to Ter, the bank later denied responsibility for his loss, saying that it was the customer's fault, and that the incident also occurred outside the bank's premises. Renowned lawyer Ronnarong Kaewphet also agreed with the bank's decision, saying that the bank had the right to deny responsibility in this case because the damage was considered to be due to Ter's negligence.
Depositing money into an ATM but forgetting one step, a man lost more than 20 million and was refused to be processed by the bank.
However, the lawyer also suggested that Mr. Ter should file a theft complaint with the police so that they could track down and arrest the couple.
After the story was widely shared in the media, it caused a heated debate. Some people said that this would be a valuable lesson for the man as well as many others and that we should all be more careful in our transactions.
"Depositing or withdrawing money at an ATM always has a final step of confirming information. If you forget because you're in a hurry, you'll have to pay the price," one person wrote.
Meanwhile, some netizens criticized the greedy couple. With the ATM having a security camera, finding their identity was not too difficult.
"How could they hold money that wasn't theirs? The camera recorded such clear images, it was only a matter of time before they were arrested by the police," one person commented.
