Host Netherlands lost 2-4 to Croatia after extra time in the first semi-final of the UEFA Nations League on June 14.

The UEFA Nations League semi-final saw a dramatic end in regulation time, with Noa Lang equalising for the Netherlands in the sixth minute of stoppage time. But the 23-year-old midfielder's efforts were not enough to turn the game around for the hosts. Croatia scored twice more in extra time to book their place in the final, where they will face either Italy or Spain.

Matthijs De Ligt's injury did not seem to affect the Netherlands much, as Ronald Koeman's players defended solidly at the start of the match. Up front, Memphis Depay's replacement Donyell Malen also shone with the opening goal in the 34th minute, after a defensive error by Croatia.

Without key centre-back Josko Gvardiol, Croatia were forced to make up for their defence with the visitors not creating many chances until they were awarded a penalty in the 55th minute. Cody Gakpo made a mistake in his control of the ball, then pulled down Luka Modric in the penalty area, allowing Andrej Kramaric to equalise from the 11m kick.

The goal had a big impact on the Dutch's spirit and tactics. From playing proactive defense, the home team lost control of the game. The looseness and indecision of the defense continued to make the Dutch pay the price in the 73rd minute. Luka Ivanusec handled the ball well in the penalty area, assisting Mario Pasalic to raise the score to 2-1 for Croatia.

Gakpo was perhaps the most tormented player on the Dutch side. After his mistake allowing the opponent to score in the first half of the second half, the Liverpool player missed two good chances, one of which came in the 90th minute. But Noa Lang made amends for his teammate, pushing the drama at De Kuip to a climax in the 90+6 minute. In the chaotic situation in front of Livakovic's goal, the midfielder currently playing for Club Brugge successfully took advantage of the opportunity to bring the match into extra time.

Croatia have often shown their character and grit in extra time at major tournaments. Zlatko Dalic's men showed that again by taking the lead in the 98th minute, when Bruno Petkovic dribbled past Frenkie de Jong and fired home from distance.

Behind, coach Koeman brought on full-back Tyrell Malacia and tall striker Wout Weghorst, and pushed Virgil Van Dijk up front. But when the high ball strategy failed to work, the Netherlands received their second penalty of the match. Malacia made a mistake, allowing Luka Modric to seal a 4-2 victory from 11m. Veteran Modric was also the best player of the match, with a goal, an assist and a big contribution in 120 minutes.
