Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said that, implementing the direction of the Ministry of Education and Training , Hanoi is developing a plan and exam method suitable for teaching and learning according to the new program.

It is expected that the unit will announce the matrix and format of the 10th grade entrance exam at the end of August 2024 so that students, parents, and schools can know and prepare for review.

As for the specific exam plan for how many subjects and which subjects are included, the unit will have specific calculations based on the general instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training; at the same time, consult experts to ensure the quality of the exam, avoiding pressure on students.

The entrance exam for grade 10 of public high schools in Hanoi is known as a stressful, pressured exam with a very high competition rate. Every year, the whole city has more than 100,000 candidates taking the exam but only about 61% of them pass the public school entrance exam. The rest will study at other types of schools including: non-public schools, vocational education centers - continuing education, vocational schools.

Previously, when studying the 2006 General Education Program, Hanoi organized the 10th grade entrance exam with 4 subjects, of which 3 subjects: math, literature, foreign language were fixed and the fourth exam subject was fixed in March every year. This was to ensure the school's education program and students had enough basic knowledge of all subjects before entering high school.

In recent years, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and many opinions from parents and teachers, Hanoi organized a 10th grade entrance exam with 3 subjects: literature, math, and foreign language.

From the 10th grade exam in 2025, there will be the first batch of students graduating from junior high school according to the 2018 General Education program, so the number of subjects, format and structure of the exam are currently unknown to students, parents and schools.

Recently, in the official dispatch guiding the implementation of tasks for the 2024-2025 school year for secondary schools, the Ministry of Education and Training requested units to strengthen the construction of question banks and test matrices according to the requirements of the subject program; prepare 9th grade students to get acquainted with the orientation of the entrance exam for grade 10.

For the literature subject, the Ministry requires that the exam will not use materials such as texts and excerpts learned in textbooks to overcome the situation of guessing questions and sample texts.

Normally, the 10th grade public high school exam in Hanoi takes place in the first half of June every year.
