This is considered a turning point in the strategy of converting waste treatment technology and developing the circular economy of the capital.
On the morning of October 13, the Hanoi People's Committee held the inauguration ceremony of the Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant in Trung Gia Commune. The project, invested by the Hanoi Thien Y Energy and Environment Joint Stock Company, is considered the largest solid waste treatment project in the country and the second largest in the world today.

The plant has a capacity to receive and process 5,000 tons of household waste per day, while generating 90 MW/hour of electricity. After the first phase has just been put into operation, the investor will continue to implement the second phase with an additional capacity of 1,600 tons/day and night, contributing to thoroughly solving the amount of household waste in the capital.
Started in August 2019, the project was completed after more than 5 years of construction under difficult conditions due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The plant uses Waterleau mechanical grate incinerator technology (Belgium), meeting European and Vietnamese environmental standards, allowing the treatment of household waste without input sorting, while utilizing thermal energy to produce clean electricity.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Dao Duc Tieu - General Director of CNTY Group, Project Investor - said: "Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant is considered a fundamental solution to the problem of treating domestic waste in the capital for many decades, as it not only solves the pollution problem but also contributes to the production of clean electricity and the regeneration of resources from waste."
Mr. Tieu further emphasized: “We aim for the goal of 'Reduction - Innocent - Resourceization' in waste treatment. From landfills, we can create energy to serve life, turn waste into resources, turn landfills into parks - that is how we want to contribute to a green - clean - beautiful - sustainable capital.”
CNTY - EUZY Group is currently the third largest unit in the world in the field of urban environment, operating in 37 countries. In Vietnam, the group has been licensed to invest in many waste treatment power generation projects in Hanoi, Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa, Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Ho Chi Minh City.
The business representative expressed his gratitude to the Government, the Hanoi Party Committee, the Hanoi People's Committee, the departments, branches and people of Soc Son area for their support throughout the project implementation process. "It is the support of the government and people of the capital that has helped us overcome all difficulties and challenges to achieve the results we have today," said Mr. Tieu.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh affirmed that putting the Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant into operation has special significance in the sustainable development strategy of the capital. He said that with an average amount of household waste of more than 7,600 tons/day, Hanoi needs modern treatment solutions to replace traditional landfill methods.
According to Mr. Thanh, this project not only helps reduce the load on landfills but also opens up a new direction in waste management, turning "waste" into "resources", in line with the orientation of building a circular, green and smart economy.
The Chairman of the City People's Committee also requested the investor to speed up the progress of phase 2 to handle all the waste remaining in the Soc Son Waste Treatment Complex, aiming to thoroughly handle the environmental pollution that has existed for many years. "This is a necessary and urgent task to gradually bring fresh air and a safe living environment to the people of the capital," Mr. Tran Sy Thanh emphasized.
Along with putting the plant into operation, Hanoi will continue to promote waste sorting at source, develop technical infrastructure, promote the application of digital technology in waste management, and encourage businesses to invest in the energy and environment sector. The city aims to completely end the burial of household waste by 2026.
Previously, on September 18, Hanoi also inaugurated the Seraphin Waste-to-Energy Plant in Tung Thien Commune (Son Tay Town) with a processing capacity of 2,250 tons/day and night, generating 37 MW of electricity. Together with Soc Son, Seraphin will form two pillars of modern waste treatment technology, aiming to build a green - clean - sustainable capital.
