Images of pedal boats appearing on the road in Thuong Tin district ( Hanoi ) during the flood caused a stir on social networks. Mr. Dang Ngoc Son (in Ninh So, Thuong Tin), the person who recorded the clip, said that at around 9am on September 11, the road in front of his house was flooded with muddy flood water.

At that time, it was raining heavily. Mr. Son observed a duck boat gliding on the water on a familiar road. After asking around, he learned that the volunteer group had used two duck boats from a nearby tourism and service unit to evacuate the elderly and children from the deeply flooded area.

At this time, the Red River water level rose, forcing many families to seek safer areas.

"In my opinion, in such urgent times, the flexibility to use locally available objects to help people evacuate safely is very welcome. As long as we achieve the goal of facilitating movement during this flood," Mr. Son shared.

The image of pedal boats speeding through the streets of the capital impressed onlookers. Many people believe that no matter how difficult the situation, Vietnamese people are always creative and flexible to overcome it.

Not only using duck boats, people in the flooded areas of Thuong Tin district also make many homemade vehicles to make it easier to move around.

The water was almost inside the house, the area where Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen (Lien Phuong commune, Thuong Tin) lived was the deepest flooded area in the village. The water rose more than 1 meter above the road surface.

Because they didn't have a boat, Huyen's husband worked hard to make a homemade boat out of a styrofoam box.

"My family sells fruit, and we have a lot of foam boxes in the house. This is a light material that can float on water. That's why my husband came up with the idea of making a boat out of these foam boxes," said Ms. Huyen.

After a few hours of disassembling and reassembling, the family completed the boat by joining together several foam boxes with tape. In front, her husband did not forget to attach plastic cans to help the boat float better on the water.

The homemade boat also has a nylon roof to protect against wind and rain. Inside the boat are styrofoam boxes with compartments so that children can sit safely while traveling.

After designing this boat, her family transported her children to her grandmother’s house 500m away to avoid flooding. Today, the water has receded, but the area where Ms. Huyen lives is still deeply flooded. Ms. Huyen said that she will probably have to use the homemade boat to move and transport her children around the area for a few more days.
