At first glance, trips to Asia may seem expensive, with airfares costing twice as much as flights to Europe. But Asia always has surprises in store for travelers who know exactly where to go for bargains.
On July 31, American travel magazine Travel & Leisure announced a list of the 10 cheapest Asian cities to travel to, based on the average round-trip economy class airfare and standard double room rates from June to December from online travel platform Kayak.
Ho Chi Minh City came in second with an average trip cost of $1,452. Ethan Crowley, a travel planner at Asia Desk, said direct flights from the U.S. to Vietnam are a significant advantage for travelers. Round-trip fares start at $660.
The capital Hanoi ranked ninth, with a total trip cost of around $1,546. Crowley said Vietnam is a destination with good and cheap food and “fantastic” public transport. Accommodation, from budget to luxury, is cheaper than the average in the region.
Compared to other Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam is the cheapest country for tourists. Street food is also "the cheapest in the region," Crowley said.
The most affordable city in Asia is Taipei. Besides Vietnam, Japan is the second country with two representatives on the list: Tokyo and Osaka. The remaining destinations include Jakarta, New Delhi, Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur.
