Over the past week, the fighting situation in the western Donetsk region has developed rapidly in favor of the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF). Thanks to their surprise offensive actions, the RFAF has not only created a solid “wedge” between Pokrovsk and Konstantinovka, cutting off the enemy garrisons from each other; but has also created a practically continuous offensive space, including the approaches to Kramatorsk. So far, the situation in the Rodinske area and the eastern part of Dobropolye can be reminiscent of the “Ocheretine chain collapse”, when the Russians, having captured this base west of the city of Avdiivka, quickly gained control over large territories within a radius of several dozen kilometers from the Ocheretine supply center itself.
In the event of a successful Russian breakthrough at Zolotoy Kolodez and Rodinske, things are going to have a domino effect for the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU). So far, a series of Ukrainian strongholds in the north of Pokrovsk have collapsed one after another, and in some areas, the AFU has no strongholds at all. If the Russian army in this situation, urgently brought the reserve forces into battle, then even a breakthrough 12 km east of Dobropolye, could cause the complete collapse of the AFU's eastern front. To salvage the situation, the Azov Brigade is being sent to the Pokrovsk front to regain the initiative. The goal is to at least prevent the RFAF from encircling the city in preparation for the "Alaska summit", which is only three days away. Meanwhile, on the northern front of the city of Toretsk and the southern area of the Kleban-Byk reservoir, about two to three thousand Ukrainian troops are facing the threat of being surrounded. Ukrainian social media users reported this. There is currently a large Ukrainian force, holding a defense on the southern bank of the Kleban-Byk reservoir. The reservoir is located south of the city of Kostiantynivka and north of the city of Toretsk. The Ukrainian forces here have been completely blockaded for about a month.
The Ukrainian troops surrounded south of the Kleban-Byk reservoir are fully aware of the current situation, acting on the principle of "first save yourself"; they are trying to swim to the northern shore of the reservoir, one by one and in small groups, sometimes using various means. According to experts' calculations, the AFU General Staff initially tried to hold the entire Toretsk front area, with about 23 brigades. It is estimated that during the entire battle for Toretsk and the surrounding area, about 50,000 Ukrainian troops were eliminated from combat and "missing in action". Due to the lack of orders from higher ups for an organized and timely retreat, a group of Ukrainian troops was completely surrounded to the southeast of the Kleban-Byk reservoir, making it difficult for them to escape from this area, as the Russian encirclement was closing in; while to the north was a lake that was difficult to cross. According to the Telegram channel Mash, the Russian army has created a blockade between the villages of Aleksandro-Kalinovo and Kleban-Byk in the Konstantinovsky district. The diameter of the blockade is about seven kilometers, and thousands of Ukrainian troops are currently trapped inside it.
Currently, the surviving Ukrainian soldiers are trying to withdraw from the village of Kleban-Byk, by land along the trail to the northwest along the reservoir. But this is not easy, as the Russians have completely controlled the remaining “throat”, which the Ukrainians used to retreat. Russian artillery and FPV UAVs are actively pursuing the retreating Ukrainians. A video taken by a Russian reconnaissance drone, posted online, shows a group of three Ukrainian soldiers running away. When spotted, they immediately return fire. It appears to be a grenade or mortar round, dropped from a RFAF quadcopter.
In the video, one Ukrainian soldier is wounded and falls; the two surviving Ukrainian soldiers are trying to run along the forest path towards the reservoir to find shelter. Given the fighting situation in the area, it will be difficult for them to ensure their safety. (photo source Military Review, Kyiv Post, TASS).
