Awakening the potential of Hai Phong waterway tourism

Hai Phong has a dense river network, the largest river density in the North, rivers surround every neighborhood, every village. Therefore, Hai Phong is called the city of rivers, the city of bridges.

These rivers not only carry many cultural and historical values but also play an important role in the socio -economic development of the city. The city has more than 50 large and small rivers, of which 16 are main rivers, the most famous of which are: Bach Dang River, Cam River, Lach Tray River, Van Uc River and Thai Binh River.

The rivers in Hai Phong have long been witnesses to history. Long ago, female general Le Chan chose the fertile alluvial land along the banks of the Cam River to reclaim and establish An Bien village, the predecessor of today's Hai Phong city.

Bach Dang River is the most legendary, sacred and heroic river in Vietnam, associated with 3 famous battles. “Giang san vong khi Bach Dang thu” (The sacred energy of mountains and rivers remains in Bach Dang).

The Cam River is a symbol of the harmony between the past, present and the bright future of the city. The three river landscape corridors: Cam River, Lach Tray River and Van Uc River will be the economic and service development corridors, and also the focus of Hai Phong river tourism development.

Speaking at the workshop “Developing waterway tourism in Hai Phong: Scientific basis, orientation and solutions”, Ms. Tran Thi Hoang Mai - Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong, shared: Currently, Hai Phong does not have river tourism tours but only has passenger transport by river and some spontaneous tourism activities.

Ms. Mai also mentioned some of the reasons hindering the development of river tourism in Hai Phong such as: Poor waterway transport infrastructure - the biggest barrier to the development of river tourism. Hai Phong's ports and wharves are general and cargo ports, there are no international marinas, no cruise ship ports, and there are no wharves at many destinations.

Currently, Vingroup has invested in Vu Yen marina, but the scale is still small and mainly serves Vinhome residents. Some routes have not been dredged regularly, leading to sedimentation, affecting the circulation of tourist vehicles.

Waterway tours in Hai Phong have not yet developed cultural, historical, religious, community, ecological, and riverside entertainment experiences. River tourism not only takes place on the river but also along the river, planning and developing discovery and experience spots will create attraction for tourists.

It is impossible to develop river tourism with the current state of waterway infrastructure. Developing river tourism in Hai Phong has not been taken seriously, there is no strategy, planning and synchronous plan. Current river tourism activities are very small, sporadic, spontaneous and fragmented, leading to ineffective exploitation, poor services, and no attraction for tourists.

The river landscape for tourism development has not been properly invested in, there is no artistic lighting system along the river, there is still a lot of trash and duckweed on the river, the riverside landscape is still dirty and dusty in some places " - Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong acknowledged the reality.

Bringing waterway tourism to international standards

Developing river tourism associated with island resort tourism products, discovery tourism, cultural and ecological experiences will be a priority in the Hai Phong Tourism Development Strategy to 2030.

To make river tourism a key product of international standards, according to Mr. Duong Duc Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong: First of all, it is necessary to build 3 modern, convenient, convenient, international-standard wharves in the area of Hoang Dieu Port, Got Wharf (Dong Bai), Cat Ba Bay and a number of national-standard inland waterway wharves at riverside destinations, prioritizing the construction of wharves on the Thai River next to the Bach Dang Giang relic site.

Tourists sitting on a cruise ship watching the Cam River, in addition to cargo ships, can also admire boats of law enforcement, rescue and relief forces on the river and at sea.

The waterway system needs to be cleared, with adequate signs and markers to ensure safety. In the immediate future, two key international-class waterways will be built, including: River-sea tourism route: Hoang Dieu Port - Got Wharf (Dong Bai) - Lan Ha Bay; River tourism route: Hoang Dieu Port - Vu Yen Marina - Bach Dang River - Bach Dang Giang Relic Site - Ruot Lon River and to Hoang Dieu Port.

Constructing 2 high-quality routes: Inner-city river tourism route: Mom Thuy Doi - Tam Bac river (proposed to cut the middle span of Tam Bac bridge, open and close to create space for boats); Sightseeing and culinary tour route on the river: Hoang Dieu port - Bach Dang bridge and back to Hoang Dieu port. In the future, routes will be expanded to Van Kiep, Con Son, Kiep Bac wharfs or long-term routes to Hanoi and to the heritage areas of the Red River Delta.

In addition, Hai Phong needs to build a live show that conveys the quintessence of Hai Phong and the coastal region through the language of art on a dry stage or a water stage. The dry stage can use the City Convention and Performance Center. The water stage can choose the Cam River or An Bien Lake.

In parallel with the project development, 5 projects are being built to develop Hai Phong river tourism: River tourism infrastructure project, focusing on building passenger wharves; River tourism vehicle project, clearly defining the types, quantity, technical and aesthetic requirements of river tourism ships and boats; River art and entertainment program project; River and bridge art lighting project; Landscape beautification project and construction of riverside destinations. With the goal of approval in the first quarter of 2026 at the latest ,” Mr. Duong Duc Hung added.

On the afternoon of April 22, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong organized a workshop on “Developing waterway tourism in Hai Phong: Scientific basis, orientation and solutions”. The event attracted the attention of many experts, researchers, managers and investment enterprises across the country.

At the workshop, researchers and speakers discussed and gave comments on the potentials and strengths of waterway tourism, the "bottlenecks" that limit the development process and solutions to remove them, in order to turn Hai Phong waterway tourism into an international-class product.

On the same morning, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong organized a survey of the scenic tourist route along the Cam River - Da Bac River (Bach Dang Giang) - Ruot Lon River and the wharves: Hong Bang Port - Hoang Dieu Port - Vu Yen Marina - Bach Dang Giang Wharf - Dragon Eye Fish Port - Hong Bang Port.
