The first semi-final match of the 2023 Asian Cup took place on the evening of February 6 between Korea and Jordan and ended with a surprising score when Jordan defeated Korea 2-0.
Similar to the group stage match, the two teams started the match with an open attacking style and Jordan was the one who created more shots on the opponent's goal. Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon struggled quite a bit at the beginning of the match and had to stretch out to save the ball in the 4th minute.
After about 10 minutes, Korea regained control of the game and Son Heung-min had a chance to put the ball into Jordan's goal in the 18th minute, but the goal was not recognized. Korea then controlled the ball more in the first half with a statistic of 61%, but they only had 4 shots, while Jordan had 12 shots on goal. In the first half, luck was still on Jordan's side when the post saved them from Son Heung-min's shot and they almost had a penalty, but after checking VAR, the referee overturned the previous decision.
The first half ended in a 0-0 draw, but in the 53rd minute, Jordan unexpectedly broke the tie. From a quick attack, Al Naimat got down to receive the ball and finished neatly by chipping the ball over the Korean goalkeeper's head, sending the ball into the net to open the scoring.
The match continued to be exciting after that as both teams continued to attack and both goalkeepers made many saves. In the 66th minute, after a Korean player lost the ball in the middle of the field, Jordan launched a quick counter-attack and Al Tamari deepened the gap with a goal to raise the score to 2-0 for Jordan.
The 2-goal gap somewhat dampened the spirit of the Korean players and they accepted to stop at the semi-finals. Jordan reached the final, and will meet the winner between Iran and Qatar on the evening of February 7.
