On January 9, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced the first development of a science- based border security system, featuring AI image analysis, thermal imaging, and short-wave infrared.
According to DAPA, the AI image analysis component enables the surveillance system to recognize detailed objects, distinguishing between humans and wild animals. Thermal imaging and short-wave infrared technology ensure the surveillance system remains operational regardless of weather conditions.
The AI-integrated advanced surveillance system will initially be introduced at the eastern joint command post (GOP) and then to coastal units later this year. The GOP is a military outpost located along the southern edge of the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas.
DAPA hopes the system will improve frontline troops’ operational conditions by reducing false alarms. The agency launched the project in 2022 and signed a contract with security firm S-1 to develop the system in November 2023.
Gen. Son-sik, head of the Army Ground Operations Command, said he will accelerate the deployment of the AI scientific defense system and actively use it in defense operations to optimize readiness.
