On the sidelines of the trilateral talks, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae Yul and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi are expected to hold a separate meeting.
Seoul and Beijing have discussed Wang Yi's visit to South Korea during his trip to Japan, but it remains unclear whether he will visit South Korea. If there is no progress, the two diplomats are likely to meet in the Japanese capital.
If it takes place, it would be the first meeting since September 2024 when the two officials met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Several diplomatic issues between the two countries could be discussed at the upcoming meeting. The meeting could also delve into the issue of US President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes, anti-China sentiment among conservatives in South Korea and a potential visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the ancient city of Gyeongju, South Korea, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November 2025.
