CNN reported that dozens of gunshots suddenly rang out at just after 6 p.m. on May 23 (local time, or the morning of May 24 in Hanoi time) near the White House grounds in Washington D.C., and the U.S. Secret Service quickly deployed forces to cordon off the entire area.

A senior official in President Donald Trump's administration told Fox News reporter Chad Pergram that the incident stemmed from a gunman "pulling out a handgun" while standing outside the West Gate of the White House and firing three shots toward the building.
Shortly afterward, U.S. Secret Service agents exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Reporter Pergram added that during the shootout, a civilian walking on the street was hit by gunfire, but their condition is unclear. The suspect was also hit by gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the suspect attempted to approach a security checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue outside the White House and opened fire on security officers. Secret Service agents then neutralized the suspect.
Selina Wang, ABC News' White House correspondent, shared a video on social media that same day capturing the moment the shots rang out. "I was filming with my phone to post on social media from the North Lawn of the White House when I heard gunshots. It sounded like dozens of shots. We were ordered to run to the briefing room," Wang wrote on social media.
The shooting occurred while President Trump was at the White House. However, the incident reportedly had no impact on operations inside. The lockdown of the White House was lifted after about 30 minutes.
The Secret Service said it is investigating the incident. FBI Director Kash Patel also announced that he has dispatched forces to the scene to assist the Secret Service in handling the matter.
