Airline cancels flights to Japan over… a comic book

A major airline has had to cancel a series of flights to Japan due to a sharp drop in passenger numbers following the belief in a "prophecy" in a comic book published in the country.

The "prophecy" appears in the comic book titled The Future I Saw: Complete Edition (2022) by artist Ryo Tatsuki, claiming that a terrible earthquake will occur in southern Japan in July.

“The real disaster will happen in July 2025,” a sentence in the book emphasizes.

The reason this "prophecy" spread so quickly on social networks and made tourists panic was because author Tatsuki had previously "predicted" accurately the great earthquake that occurred in eastern Japan in 2011 in a comic published in 1996.

As a result, the number of tourists to southern Japan has dropped sharply, forcing Hong Kong Airlines to cancel flights to popular tourist destinations Kagoshima and Kumamoto in July and August this year.

The airline only resumed flights to Kagoshima last year for the first time in four years. In December 2024, it increased flights from three to four times a week due to high demand.

However, the company has been seeing a drop in demand following the comic book rumors, since May.

Hong Kong Airlines said affected passengers can rebook to alternative destinations, including other cities in Japan and mainland China, as well as Taipei, Bangkok and Da Nang .

"We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused by this flight adjustment and promise to do our best to assist affected passengers and provide appropriate travel arrangements," a representative of the airline told Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post .

"It is a serious issue that unscientific claims are spreading on social media and affecting tourism," Miyagi Governor Yoshihiro Murai said at a press conference on April 23.
