Bkav said that 2024 and the first months of 2025 witnessed the rampage of viruses. Accordingly, in 2024 alone, 155,640 computers in Vietnam were attacked by ransomware. The recorded damage amounted to tens of thousands of billions of VND, including: money paid to hackers to ransom data, lost revenue due to system downtime, losses due to lost customers, and affected brands. However, experts assessed: the above figures are just the tip of the iceberg.

According to Bkav's research, virus activities are increasingly dangerous and sophisticated with clear and systematic attack strategies. Data encryption viruses target businesses, extortion targets with huge ransoms. Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) viruses silently spread in agencies and organizations to steal intelligence information.

It is known that many agencies and units that have had Bkav respond to incidents caused by virus attacks often do not install anti-virus software, or use foreign software, without the supervision of experts. Many units even rely only on the anti-virus feature of the available operating system - this is an opportunity for today's sophisticated viruses to attack.

Experts assess that many viruses are still hiding in systems in Vietnam, they are spreading silently and will cause harm, attacking at the right time in the near future. Therefore, units need to raise awareness of network security as well as apply professional preventive measures.

Overall, ransomware remains one of the biggest threats in 2025 and its attacks will become more sophisticated and targeted. The targets go beyond data, to stealing sensitive information and making public threats if the ransom is not paid.

The National Cyber Security Association also conducted a survey and showed that the scale and number of attacks on units increased rapidly. Of the units participating in the survey in 2024, 46.15% were attacked at least once a year and 6.77% were attacked frequently.

ATP and ransomware attacks are the two most common forms of attack in 2024 with 26.14% of ATP attacks and 14.59% of ransomware attacks.

Faced with this situation, experts recommend that units regularly review and promptly handle existing vulnerabilities in the system, and regularly monitor network security to promptly detect risks.

At the same time, it is necessary to plan and respond to ensure data security and minimize damage when incidents occur.
