On June 13th, Nio announced the fourth generation of battery swapping stations from the Chinese premium electric vehicle manufacturer, with two new locations in Guangdong and Anhui provinces.
The new generation of battery stations being introduced will be more open, supporting service for multiple vehicle brands with a wider range of battery pack sizes.
Nio's new battery swapping station reduces service time by 22%, increases the number of stored batteries to 23, and provides up to 480 charging services per day.

Nio's first-generation battery station, launched in 2020, could only hold 5 batteries; now, with the fourth generation, the number of interchangeable batteries has more than quadrupled.
In terms of technology, the fourth-generation station is equipped with six ultra-wide-angle LiDAR sensors and four Nvidia Orin X chips, allowing vehicles with autonomous driving technology to enter the station; the driver only needs to get out of the car from the outside door.
Across China, Nio has established 2,432 battery swapping stations, 804 of which are located along highways.
The company plans to add another 1,000 battery swapping stations in China this year, bringing the total to over 3,310.
According to Nio, battery swapping stations can break even if they provide 60 services per day, currently around 30 charging sessions per day.
Nio is one of the rare electric vehicle manufacturers betting on battery swapping as a technological option, along with setting up a battery swapping network that takes only 2 minutes, faster than refueling with gasoline.
However, there have been incidents where Nio electric vehicles have had their batteries fall off onto the road due to loose battery packs after leaving a battery exchange station.
Currently, the Chinese and Indian markets are implementing battery swapping solutions for passenger cars, while other markets only offer battery swapping for buses and specialized vehicles.
