Journey of love

Regardless of the long distance, without any thanks or reward, Mr. Nguyen The Huan, from Dien Ha commune (Duyen Hai commune, Hung Ha district, old Thai Binh province, now Hung Yen province) brought his personal excavator to Thai Nguyen to join the people in cleaning up after the flood. His simple but warm action made many people admire him, spreading the spirit of "mutual love" in the community.

From October 11 until now, Mr. Huan and other forces have been cleaning up many residential areas and main streets in the center of Thai Nguyen province.

After the historic flood, the streets and residential areas in Thai Nguyen were all submerged in mud and garbage. While Thai Nguyen was urgently dealing with the consequences, there was a man quietly operating an old excavator, joining the forces diligently cleaning up and sanitizing the environment. Not many people knew that Mr. Nguyen The Huan, the excavator driver, had come from a far away place to Thai Nguyen to support the people.

“Right when Thai Nguyen was urgently overcoming the consequences of the natural disaster, Mr. Nguyen The Huan proactively contacted us, using his personal excavator to volunteer to help,” said Ms. Truong Thu Dieu, an officer of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Thai Nguyen province.

Knowing that Thai Nguyen was heavily affected by the floods, Mr. Huan proactively prepared fuel, checked his excavator and then went to help the people, even though the distance was hundreds of kilometers. He recounted: “I went alone from Dien Ha commune, Hung Yen province. When I was about 6km from Thai Nguyen, my car broke down in the middle of the road. I had to stop to sleep, and the next morning I fixed it and continued on my way.”

Upon arriving, Mr. Huan immediately got to work. Every day from morning to night, his body covered in mud, he still had a gentle smile. From October 11th until now, that man has been working hard in the excavator cabin, joining forces to clear each pile of garbage, each puddle of mud in the neighborhoods and main roads of the administrative center of Thai Nguyen province.

Ms. Truong Thu Dieu emotionally said: These days, Mr. Huan has been working through lunch, without any problem, sometimes he only needs a box of milk to get through lunch. When I thanked him, he said: If I thought I needed to thank him, I wouldn't have brought the machine up. The alley is small, so the machine could only get in to clean for the people.

Sharing with us, Mr. Huan smiled gently: “Seeing the people in the flood area suffer so much, I want to do something meaningful and practical. I am still too busy so I just stay here and do it. When things are more open, I will feel secure to go back. I hope there will be more people like me, supporting the people of Thai Nguyen to overcome this difficult time.”
