10 hours urgently coordinated with the police of Dakrong district ( Quang Tri ) to rescue and rehabilitate a Bengal tiger in critical condition. Received more than 1,500 wild individuals continuously in 48 hours. Those were just 2 of many "lightning-fast" and responsible rescue trips of River Safari (part of the VinWonders Nam Hoi An entertainment complex) in the first days of 2024. This is currently the only rescue and conservation center in the Central region with thousands of rare animals living in an ideal environment, with growth conditions closest to natural habits.
Traveling more than 1,500 km to rescue thousands of wild animals
On the evening of a day before the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin, Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Giau, General Manager of VinWonders Nam Hoi An (Quang Nam) received a phone call from the authorities: There were more than 1,500 parrots, monitor lizards, South American dragons, pythons, turtles... in need of urgent rescue from Pu Mat National Park ( Nghe An ). The large number of individuals, belonging to 37 species, including many species that have never been raised at River Safari, required additional facilities and a large number of staff to meet the care conditions. With the mission of rescuing and preserving wildlife of River Safari, that same night, Ms. Giau quickly received approval from her superiors to confirm and organize a team of experts and doctors to immediately go "pick up" the new members.
The road to Pu Mat National Park is more than 1,500 km long, with many narrow, bumpy sections that are very difficult to travel. “People can endure the fast, bumpy travel... but how to bring the animals back safely, ensuring their health and spirit is the biggest pressure for us. From the plan to arrange the cages, tie the ropes, to control the steering wheel to make the thousand-kilometer journey as smooth as possible for them... is a process that the whole team coordinates together continuously and rhythmically. From February 6 to the afternoon of February 8 (ie 29th of Tet), the team forgot all their fatigue, focusing on taking care of all 1,500 animals to return to River Safari safely. Only then did we dare to breathe a sigh of relief, happily hugging each other when the last animal cage was brought to the oases,” Ms. Ngoc Giau recounted.
After the transportation journey, raising, importing large amounts of food, monitoring, integrating... for more than 1,500 new residents almost took up the entire Tet Giap Thin of the River Safari animal care department. "Many of my colleagues voluntarily rearranged their plans to return home for Tet to stay and take care of the new animals" - Ms. Giau recalled with emotion. "They shared with me that when the "little ones" are healthy and get used to the new cage, we can come back home to visit later". That is the wish that comes from the special love of animals of the River Safari staff.
The ideal home for wildlife in the Central region
Not long before, Ms. Giau also received a call to coordinate the rescue of a Bengal tiger weighing more than 200kg that was being illegally transported and traded in Dakrong, Quang Tri. Due to being anesthetized and transported for a long time in a cramped iron cage, the "king of the jungle" was in poor health, showing signs of danger to his life. Immediately, preparations were made to receive the tiger with the worst health scenario.
The reception, emergency treatment and a series of medical procedures were urgently carried out for six hours. The Bengal tiger was then brought to a spacious, quiet enclosure and monitored and cared for by doctors 24/7. More than a week later, no one could recognize this as a rescued individual because the Bengal tiger was majestically walking around its own private oasis at River Safari Nam Hoi An.
Previously, for about 3 consecutive months from late 2023 to early 2024, this conservation park welcomed nearly 30 meerkats, wallabies, capybaras, rodents from Quang Ninh, along with a series of rare animals, listed as in urgent need of conservation such as Java pangolins, large white pelicans, blue-eyed white parrots, South American dragons... All of them were illegally hunted, smuggled, and kept in unsuitable living environments, leading to many health and behavioral problems.
Ms. Ngoc Giau said: “Every year, the authorities in Vietnam continuously prevent many cases of illegal wildlife trafficking, hunting, and smuggling. Caring for, raising, and reintroducing these individuals really requires time, facilities, and comprehensive care from a team of experts. After nearly 6 years of investment and efforts to build the function of a rescue and conservation center, River Safari is now ready to meet the best living conditions, both physically and mentally, for wild animals.”
“I still remember in August 2022, we rescued 2 pangolins in poor condition. At first, they were very shy, refusing to interact or eat. The whole team had to take shifts to monitor them 24/7 and persistently come up with technical methods to help the pangolins feel safe, thereby changing their wariness of everything around them. After more than 4 months with good care conditions, they gave birth to 1 baby pangolin. That was an extremely surprising “sweet fruit” for us conservationists,” Mr. Le Viet Cuong - Head of the River Safari Animal Care Department proudly said.
In addition to the rescued individuals, River Safari Nam Hoi An is currently the "home" of more than 500 individuals of 50 rare animal species, with living conditions recreated with natural habits. Here, each wild member not only settles down and lives according to a very scientific schedule and regime, but can also "find a mate" and create new families. Hundreds of F1 generation members of lions, tigers, bears, antelopes, black swans, etc. are continuously born each year, which is a vivid proof of the happy and fulfilling atmosphere at the first river safari zoo in Vietnam./.
