A Polish metal detectorist named Patryk Chmielewski was working in a field in the village of Mikułowice in the Opatów region of southeastern Poland when he unexpectedly found a strange object. Sent to the Opatów Provincial Office for Monument Protection, further archaeological exploration and analysis revealed that it was a set of Hussar armor. Hussars were light cavalry mounted on fast horses. They were skilled horsemen recruited from the wealthiest Polish nobility. Photo: @Patryk Chmielewski.
“The armor is incomplete, lacking the basic elements of Hussar armor, including a breastplate and a backplate that protected the chest and back, as well as shoulder pads,” explains Dr. Hab Marek Florek of the Opatów Oblast Monuments Protection Office.
