Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan speaks at the 17th Red Sunday launch ceremony.

“This year, entering its 17th edition, Red Sunday hopes to promote deeper awareness of the meaning of donating blood to save lives. When we donate blood, it is not only an act of giving life but also a concrete expression of compassion, love and responsibility towards the community,” shared journalist Phung Cong Suong.

Arriving early, 100 students of the People's Police Academy registered to donate blood, many of whom had donated blood more than 10 times, some of whom had donated blood 2-3 times.

Captain Trieu Duy Hoang, working at the Mobile Police Department of Tuyen Quang Provincial Police, currently studying at the People's Police Academy, shared: "This is the second time I have donated blood in 2024. Before that, in March, I donated blood at Tuyen Quang Provincial Police. In April, I went to Hanoi to enroll in school and this is the first time I have donated blood in the capital. Compared to previous blood donations, this time the scale of the organization is larger, with more young people participating."

According to Captain Hoang, he can’t remember how many times he has donated blood, on average he donates blood twice a year. Accompanying him was his colleague who works in the same unit and studies at the People’s Police Academy – Captain Nguyen Bao Trung. “This is my 6th blood donation and the first time I have donated blood since enrolling at the People’s Police Academy,” Captain Trung shared.

Both police officers said that donating blood is a noble act, “a drop of blood given – a life saved”, saving a person is accumulating a good deed. Therefore, whenever they are healthy enough, the two officers register to donate blood to save lives.

Waiting for his turn to donate blood, student Pham Thanh Tung from the People's Police Academy said that he had donated blood more than 10 times. The first time Tung donated blood was when he was a student at the People's Police College 6. After that, he worked at the Nam Dinh City Police Department and donated blood whenever the provincial police department launched a campaign. The memory that the student remembers most is that a few years ago, a colleague's family member had to be rushed to the emergency room and needed blood urgently, but the hospital's blood bank ran out of blood type B.

Receiving the news of the blood donation campaign from the Nam Dinh Blood Donor Club, Tung reported to the unit and went to the hospital to donate blood. Fortunately, the patient after receiving the blood was over the critical stage and his health improved. “Helping the patient with my own blood makes me feel very happy. Donating blood to save people is a noble act, so when the patient needs blood, I am ready to donate at any time,” Tung shared.

According to Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan, at certain times there is still a shortage of blood, while the demand for blood transfusion is increasing due to the increasing demand for medical care. Therefore, ensuring enough blood for emergency and treatment needs is always a huge pressure for the health sector.

The Deputy Minister of Health hopes that the Red Sunday program, which carries a noble humanitarian meaning, will be increasingly replicated to contribute to the sustainable development of the voluntary blood donation movement nationwide. At the same time, the Deputy Minister calls on agencies, units and people in the community to actively participate in propaganda and mobilization work for blood donation and directly participate in blood donation to join hands to build a healthier and more humane society, for our own health and for the lives of many patients.
