The land border between Vietnam and China was formed through the historical process and has existed relatively stably since the 10th century. During the colonial period, the French Government and the Qing Dynasty of China signed the Conventions of June 26, 1887 and the supplementary convention of June 20, 1895. These were the first international legal documents defining the border between Vietnam and China.

After normalizing relations in 1991, the two countries resumed negotiations on territorial borders. The result was the Vietnam-China Land Border Treaty signed by the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of the People's Republic of China on December 30, 1999. The Vietnam-China Land Border Treaty, signed in December 1999, is an important milestone in the relationship between the two countries. After 25 years of implementation, we can look back at the successes and positive impacts that the Treaty has brought to both sides. The Treaty has demonstrated the determination of both Vietnam and China to jointly resolve border issues peacefully and based on the principle of mutual respect. This has helped affirm and protect Vietnam's territorial sovereignty . The signing of the Treaty has contributed to building a close cooperative relationship between the two countries, creating momentum for the development of other areas such as economy, trade, culture and tourism. This relationship not only benefits the two countries but also contributes to stability in the region. The Treaty contributes to resolving territorial disputes at the border, helping to reduce tensions and potential conflicts. After the agreement was signed, the two sides planted markers and determined the boundary, creating favorable conditions for border management. Thanks to the treaty, the security situation in the border area has improved, creating conditions for people living in the border area to live in a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment. The treaty has also created conditions for enhanced cooperation between the border provinces of the two countries. Meetings, exchanges and cooperation between localities have taken place regularly, promoting cultural and economic exchanges. The clear demarcation of the boundary has helped protect the rights of fishermen and residents living in the border area, while minimizing conflicts related to the use of resources in the border area. The treaty has also created a solid foundation for Vietnam and China to participate in multilateral forums and international cooperation on security issues and sustainable development in the region.

On August 2, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with relevant ministries, branches and localities to organize a conference to review 25 years of signing the Border Treaty and 15 years of signing three legal documents on the Vietnam-China land border.
In his opening speech, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that the event had great historical significance, opening a new page in the relationship between the two countries, marking an important turning point in the history of building the Vietnam-China border, contributing to creating and maintaining a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world. In addition, the completion of the land border demarcation work also contributed to promoting socio-economic development, especially between the border provinces of the two countries.
The completion of the settlement of the land border issue between Vietnam and China is an important milestone in the relationship between the two countries that has experienced many ups and downs. This is also considered an achievement built on the political determination, intelligence, blood and tears of many generations of Vietnamese and Chinese people, especially in the new era under the leadership of the two Communist Parties. This historical achievement has laid the legal and political foundation for the two countries to maintain a peaceful and stable environment for economic development, ensuring security, national defense... to meet the aspirations of the people of the two countries. The Vietnam-China land border treaty not only affirms the important role in preserving territorial sovereignty but also contributes to creating a peaceful, stable and developing environment for both sides. These successes need to continue to be promoted in the future, especially in the context of many regional and international fluctuations./.
