"The last five minutes are really difficult, players can lose focus and lead to conceding a goal. When the Indonesian U23 player was about to throw the ball in, I tried to create something to influence him, to show my students that I was also fighting with them.
I decided to react to the referee to prolong the match, of course just enough to avoid getting a red card. That was the time for the players to regain their composure and focus," said coach Kim Sang Sik.

Coach Kim Sang Sik left his mark and made a great contribution to the third consecutive championship of U23 Vietnam in the Southeast Asian tournament, but he did not take credit for himself but instead gave praise and thanks to the players.
"I am very satisfied with the players, both physically and mentally. I feel very proud of them. The players performed their best and the result of the Vietnam U23 team winning the Southeast Asian U23 championship," said Mr. Kim.
Didn't think there would be 2 Championship Cups in 8 months
After winning the 2024 ASEAN Cup with the Vietnamese team earlier this year, coach Kim Sang Sik continued to make history with the U23 Vietnam team with their third consecutive championship. This is an unprecedented achievement for a coach in Southeast Asia.
"I really didn't think I could do it. I thank the fans and the players. Over the past long time, the players have been persistent and hard-working.
Everyone knows that the Indonesian, Philippine, and Thai teams have many naturalized players. They are very strong. Surely after this tournament, the opponents will study each other more carefully. We have our own calculations to renew the squad. The teams, including U23 Vietnam, will have many changes towards the SEA Games," Coach Kim Sang Sik shared.
After the success with both the national team and the U23 Vietnam team, coach Kim Sang Sik did not forget to talk about his predecessor Park Hang Seo: "Mr. Park has given me a lot of advice and teachings to help me do a good job here. I hope to be able to achieve many achievements like coach Park Hang Seo.
I think Mr. Park Hang Seo is probably a hero to Vietnamese fans. I try my best to follow Mr. Park's achievements."
Give young players a chance
"Through this tournament, the players have matured a lot. In the future, we will gradually find new factors and new strategies to help the team become stronger towards the goal of the 2030 World Cup.
After the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament, I have a plan to use young players in the Vietnam national team. Many players have the ability to help the team improve. The coaching staff and I continue to monitor their growth through domestic tournaments. The door to the national team is always open to players," coach Kim Sang Sik emphasized.
"Many U23 Vietnam players are still very young, some will only be 23 years old in a few years. They all have made progress and matured after the recent tournament. The future will be very bright if they continue to hone their skills and train physically.
In the immediate future, we are preparing for the 2026 AFC U23 qualifiers in September and then the 33rd SEA Games in December. I think all the players must really try and make great efforts," Coach Kim Sang Sik concluded.
