This is also the first time in the history of Vietnamese women's football to participate in the World Cup, after the painful failure to qualify (the 2015 World Cup in Canada) at Thong Nhat Stadium when losing 1-2 to rival Thailand in the 5th place match of the Women's Asian Cup in May 2014.
