The extra hole match to determine the champion of the most prestigious PGA Tour tournament will begin with the method of comparing the points of the three final "rounds" of the battlefield, which almost happened in the last 2024 tournament.

The 2024 edition marks the 50th anniversary of The Players Championship. The tournament has only had five playoffs, four of them sudden death, the last in 2015, a year after the PGA Tour implemented the “start with three holes” rule. The Players Championship results recently showed Scheffler winning at -20 and receiving a prize of $4.5 million, while Clark finished T2 (-19) with Brian Harman and Xander Schauffele. The Clark group received a joint prize of $1.891 million. Scheffler is the first golfer to win the trophy two consecutive times since the tournament's inception in 1974.
