People in Son Vi border commune, Tuyen Quang province enjoy quality medical services through a program of free medical examination and medicine distribution.

Recently, the Department of Health of Tuyen Quang province, Phuong Bac General Hospital, Medical Center and Meo Vac Regional General Hospital organized free medical examination, treatment and medicine for people in Son Vi border commune. Participating in the program were more than 50 doctors and nurses from medical facilities in the province, along with many modern equipment such as ultrasound, X-ray, fundus examination, vision measurement, electrocardiogram, blood and urine tests.

From early morning, people from remote villages and hamlets were present at Son Vi Commune Health Station to register for medical examination. Everyone was eager, looking forward to their turn to be examined and receive health advice from a team of experienced doctors and nurses. Ms. Vang Thi Mai, a resident of Son Vi Commune, said: “I live in a mountainous village and rarely go to hospitals for medical examinations. Today, knowing that there is a program to examine and provide free medicine right in the commune, my whole family decided to go down for a check-up.”

The program also combines health consultation and propaganda to raise awareness among people about health care for themselves, their families and the community. All medical examination data is integrated into people's electronic health records, facilitating long-term health monitoring and care.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Sac, Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Vi Commune, said: “Organizing free medical examinations, consultations, and medicine distribution in mountainous communes is a meaningful activity, contributing to improving health care for the people. Through this program, people can access modern medical services without having to travel far. We hope that the program will be organized annually.”

The program of medical examination and free medicine distribution for people in the highlands has been implemented by the Department of Health of Ha Giang province (old) since the beginning of 2025. After the merger of Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang provinces, the program continues to be maintained in all communes of Ha Giang province (old). To implement the program, the provincial health sector directs medical facilities to arrange human resources and medical equipment; at the same time, mobilizes the support of benefactors and businesses in providing medicine and gifts to people.

Doctor Nguyen Van Canh, Director of Phuong Bac General Hospital said: “Implementing the plan of the Tuyen Quang Provincial Department of Health, the hospital mobilized human resources and medical equipment to actively participate in the program. Recently, we mobilized 15 doctors and nurses to examine about 8,000 people in the two border communes of Son Vi and Dong Van. In addition to free medical examination and medicine, we gave gifts to all people who came for examination with a total gift value of more than 50 million VND.”

Up to now, Tuyen Quang province has organized a program of free medical examination and medicine distribution in all communes in Ha Giang province (old). The total number of people who have received free medical examination and medicine is up to more than 406 thousand people. Of which, more than 278 thousand electronic health records have been integrated, helping to manage and monitor people's health status in a scientific and sustainable manner. The total cost of implementing the program is more than 2.7 billion VND, mobilized from the state budget and socialized sources.

Through the examinations, many cases of people with chronic non-communicable diseases were diagnosed for the first time, mainly diseases of blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes. In addition, many people were found to have eye, ear, nose and throat diseases, and even congenital malformations. All examination data was updated in the electronic health records. Mr. Nguyen Van Giao, Deputy Director of the Department of Health of Tuyen Quang province, said: "Free health examinations in remote communes help people enjoy quality medical services right in their locality, reducing travel costs. In particular, early detection of chronic diseases will help people treat them promptly and avoid complications."

This humanitarian program also contributes to raising people's awareness in monitoring their personal health, proactively changing their lifestyle to a healthy one, suitable for their physical condition and age. This is an important step in detecting potential diseases early, thereby creating favorable conditions for people to receive early treatment. "When people in the highlands are detected and managed from the early stages at the grassroots level, long-term treatment costs will be reduced, while reducing pressure on large hospitals, creating a more effective and comprehensive health care system," said Mr. Nguyen Van Giao.
