Prince Harry wants to change his mother's surname

Prince Harry wants to take the surname Spencer of his late mother - Princess Diana - after falling out with the royal family.

A friend of Prince Harry told the Daily Mail in an article published over the weekend that the Duke of Sussex sought advice from Princess Diana's younger brother, Charles Spencer, during his rare visit to the UK.

Prince Harry asked his uncle, Charles Spencer (full name Charles Edward Maurice Spencer), how he could take his mother's surname. However, sources claim Harry was told there would be too many legal hurdles.

"They had a very friendly conversation and Mr Spencer advised Harry not to take such a step," the friend said.

There are additional sources saying that Harry is considering changing his surname from Mountbatten-Windsor to Spencer, which is the name his two children with Meghan Markle, Prince Archie (5 years old) and Princess Lilibet (3 years old) will have on their birth certificates.

According to Page Six , the two children's birth names are Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor. In 2022, their titles will be Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex. In 2024, Sussex will be Prince Harry's family name.

Meghan Markle shared in an episode of Netflix 's With Love, Meghan , which premiered in March, that she and her husband also use the surname Sussex.

Prince Harry's wife - the host of the podcast Confessions of a Female Founder - chatted with guest Mindy Kaling, who kept calling her "Meghan Markle". The former actress corrected: "It's funny that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I'm Sussex."

Tensions with the royal family make Prince Harry want to change his last name

Harry and Markle have been estranged from the royal family since 2020 when the couple gave up their roles as senior royals and moved to California.

Tensions rose when Harry wrote about his family tragedy in his memoir Spare, published in 2023.

Prince Harry's relationship with his father, King Charles (76), and his brother, Prince William (42), remains frosty despite his efforts to mend it. Princess Diana divorced King Charles in 1996 - just a year before her tragic death in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36.
