According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the number of candidates registering for the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 is 76,435 students (equivalent to 76,435 students registering for their first choice). Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City has 88,535 9th grade students. Thus, more than 12,000 9th grade students proactively did not register for the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025.

This year, the total enrollment quota for public grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City is approximately 70,000 students. Of which, schools under the Department of Education and Training will enroll more than 68,000 students; high schools under universities will enroll more than 1,200 students. It is expected that the 2025 grade 10 entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City will be less stressful.

In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City also had 16,252 students who actively did not take the exam, accounting for 14.15%. This number was 14.33% in 2022, and 15.35% in 2023.

The Department of Education and Training conducted a preliminary survey at the Department of Education and Training of districts and Thu Duc City and found that there were many reasons why students actively did not take the exam, such as: Being eligible for direct admission (7.42%); choosing to study abroad or change their residence (9.37%); learning a trade at colleges or intermediate schools, studying at continuingeducation - vocational education centers or continuing to study at private schools (79.63%); other reasons (3.58%).

“Choosing a career path after graduating from junior high school that is suitable for the individual’s learning and career development needs, corresponding to the development of society, is a positive trend among students and parents today. This also reflects the types of schools, continuing education centers - vocational education, colleges, intermediate schools, and vocational schools in the city have gradually affirmed their reputation and training quality to the people,” said a representative of the Department of Education and Training.

Currently, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has announced the number of first-choice applications to schools. This is the basis for candidates to adjust their applications after knowing the competition ratio.
