Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang chaired the 3rd meeting of the Vietnam - Bangladesh Joint Trade Subcommittee and the Business Trade Forum between the two countries.

From May 13-15, 2025, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam Phan Thi Thang led a delegation to Bangladesh to attend and co-chair the 3rd Meeting of the Vietnam - Bangladesh Joint Trade Subcommittee with Deputy Minister of Commerce of Bangladesh Mahbubur Rahman.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang also co-chaired the Vietnam - Bangladesh Business Trade Forum 2025, attracting the participation of more than 150 delegates representing ministries, trade promotion organizations and business communities of the two countries.

The third meeting of the Joint Trade Subcommittee took place in the context of increasingly positive development of Vietnam-Bangladesh relations. At the meeting, the two sides reviewed the implementation of the contents agreed at the previous meeting, discussed existing issues and proposed new directions to promote substantive cooperation in the economic and trade fields.

The two sides reaffirmed the goal of soon reaching the 2 billion USD mark in bilateral trade and agreed to strengthen coordination to remove barriers and facilitate businesses of the two countries. Vietnam highly appreciated the close coordination of Bangladesh and affirmed that it will continue to proactively promote cooperation in areas such as pharmaceuticals, information and communication technology, agricultural products, Halal products, construction materials and logistics.

In particular, the Vietnamese side proposed that the two sides soon establish a mutual recognition mechanism for Halal certification, and promote the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of information technology. In the pharmaceutical sector - a strong industry of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh side proposed that the two sides establish a Technical Working Group to facilitate product registration and circulation.

The two sides also acknowledged the proposal for direct air connectivity between Vietnam and Bangladesh, considering this one of the important factors to help reduce logistics costs, promote trade, tourism and people-to-people exchange.

Regarding the opening of the market for Bangladeshi potatoes, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said it has actively coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to guide the procedures for registering exporting countries. Bangladesh has begun submitting documents and is requested to continue to proactively contact specialized agencies to complete the process according to regulations.

On the afternoon of March 14, 2025, the Vietnam - Bangladesh Business Forum 2025 chaired by Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang took place in a lively atmosphere. Here, Deputy Minister Thang delivered a speech emphasizing the role of businesses in promoting substantive cooperation between the two countries and suggested that businesses on both sides proactively share information, seek partners and build stable and long-term cooperative relationships.

Within the framework of the Forum, nearly 20 Vietnamese enterprises participated in direct connection sessions with more than 130 Bangladeshi enterprises, focusing on areas such as construction materials, pharmaceuticals, food, technological equipment, agricultural products and e-commerce. Many initial cooperation opportunities were established, opening up prospects for specific contracts in the coming time. Enterprises also brought and displayed goods, B2B with Bangladeshi enterprises at the goods display area for bilateral trade.

On the sidelines of the meeting and the Vietnam - Bangladesh Business Forum, Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang also worked with the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangladesh, visited and worked at the FPT IS Bangladesh Office to grasp the business situation and operations of Vietnamese enterprises in Bangladesh.

Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang's working trip and chairing of this meeting contributed to maintaining the annual bilateral trade cooperation mechanism, while creating new momentum for the business communities of the two countries in the context of global trade recovery and restructuring.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade continues to accompany businesses and closely coordinate with Bangladeshi partners to promote initiatives, trade and investment cooperation programs and connect businesses of the two countries in the coming time.

Bangladesh is currently Vietnam's second largest trading partner in South Asia. In 2024, bilateral trade turnover reached approximately 1.1 billion USD, up 4.4% compared to 2023. In the first 4 months of 2025, two-way trade turnover continued to grow positively, reaching 423 million USD, up 14.6% over the same period. Vietnam currently exports to Bangladesh key products such as steel, clinker, cement, rice, machinery and equipment, and consumer goods; while importing pharmaceuticals, textile materials, jute, and Halal food from Bangladesh. Bangladesh is identified as one of Vietnam's strategic markets in South Asia, playing an important role as a bridge in the supply chain and accessing markets in the Middle East and South Asia.
