TPO - After 10 years, more than 30,000 students in Ho Chi Minh City have studied integrated mathematics, science, and English.

The number of students taking integrated English courses has increased 50-fold in 10 years.

This information was provided by Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, at the conference summarizing 10 years of implementing the project on teaching and learning Mathematics, Science, and English integrated with the English and Vietnamese curricula (English integrated program).

According to the Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, in the first year of the program's implementation, only 600 students from 18 schools participated. By the 2023-2024 school year, ten years later, over 30,000 students had participated in the integrated English program, spread across 160 schools in 20 districts throughout Ho Chi Minh City.

"This shows that the demand for learning English in combination with scientific subjects is increasing," Mr. Quoc observed.

Regarding students' academic performance, Mr. Quoc assessed that they consistently achieve high scores, especially in Mathematics and Science. The percentage of students achieving excellent grades in periodic and final exams in Mathematics and Science taught in English consistently reaches 85-90%.

The program has helped many students achieve high scores in international academic competitions. The majority of students, upon completing the program at all levels, have achieved a corresponding level according to the Ministry of Education and Training 's 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework, equivalent to the levels in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Replicating the model

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong assessed that Ho Chi Minh City's Project 5695 demonstrates the accurate and effective advice, the determination to think outside the box, and the willingness to innovate from the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong suggested that Ho Chi Minh City continue to consider, based on the experience of implementing English-language instruction in Mathematics and Science, to research expanding it to other subjects where possible.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lan, General Director of EMG Education - the unit coordinating the implementation of the integrated English program, believes that the project achieved the above results because it ensured four key elements.

In particular, the "four stakeholders" model, including administrators, schools, businesses, and learners (parents), has proven exceptionally effective in integrating English into the teaching of core subjects such as mathematics and science in English.

Furthermore, the highly qualified teaching staff, the creation of a practical English-learning environment, and the continuous improvement of technology in the teaching process, such as 3D models, Virtual Experiments labs, and Metaverse-based classrooms, help students access modern educational materials and technologies.

Ms. Lan affirmed that this is the foundation for the project to create a sustainable education model, suitable for Vietnam's conditions and meeting the trend of international integration. Students will not only excel in knowledge but also confidently communicate and work in English, ready to compete fairly with their international peers.

Thanks to parental support.

According to Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, the success of the project is also thanks to the support of parents and students. When first implemented, the education sector had to be very persistent, persuasive, and demonstrate the program's effectiveness through the quality of training.

Ms. Thuy noted that the number of students participating in the program is still small compared to the city's 1.7 million students. The Vietnamese teaching staff is only a small fraction, with the majority being native-speaking teachers. Therefore, she affirmed that Ho Chi Minh City will continue implementing the project, requesting the education sector to research expansion, increase access opportunities, and raise the number of participating students.
