Journalist Do Thi Thanh Binh (left) - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Tien Phong and Children Newspaper and Doan Thi Thu Huyen - Country Director in Vietnam, Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) awarded the First Prize in the video clip category of the contest.
The contest is organized by the Young Pioneers and Children Newspaper (Central Office of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union) in collaboration with the Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) in Vietnam, with the support of the Department of Mothers and Children ( Ministry of Health ), the World Health Organization (WHO) and many children and parents nationwide.
Launched from May 10 to July 10, the contest aims to raise public awareness, especially among children and students, about drowning accidents - the leading cause of death in Vietnamese children with more than 2,000 cases each year according to a report by the Ministry of Health in 2019.
Meanwhile, currently only about 8.63% of schools nationwide have swimming pools, making it difficult to teach swimming and disseminate drowning prevention skills.
With the contest format of drawing and making video clips, the contest has become an educational and creative playground for children from 4 to 15 years old nationwide.
Dr. Duong Khanh Van - Technical Officer, World Health Organization (right) and journalist Bui Viet Cuong - Chairman of the Trade Union of Young Pioneers and Children Newspapers, Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee of the contest, presented awards to the third prize winners.
After only 2 months of launching, the organizing committee has received nearly 700 paintings and more than 100 video clips. The works show innocence and creativity but are also very profound in conveying messages about life skills, vigilance and how to handle situations when encountering accidents in water.
The jury worked impartially to select the 50 best works, including 28 prizes for paintings and 22 prizes for video clips. The award structure includes Special, First, Second, Third and Encouragement prizes, awarded to children with outstanding messages, impressive images and positive content.
Speaking at the award ceremony, representatives of the Ministry of Health and international organizations highly appreciated the educational and social effectiveness of the competition. Especially in the context of the peak summer season, when the risk of drowning is high, children being able to equip themselves with knowledge and at the same time spread awareness to friends and relatives through creative forms such as drawings and videos is a practical and modern approach.
“Each work is not only a skill lesson, but also a reminder to the community that drowning prevention cannot be taken lightly. We hope that after the award ceremony, the message of “Preventing drowning – Protecting life” will continue to be spread in families, schools and the whole society,” said the organizers.
The 2025 “Drowning - Prevention Steps” contest not only affirms the role of creative communication in educating life skills for children, but also contributes to promoting the building of a safe school environment and comprehensive development for future generations.
This is a practical propaganda model that can continue to be expanded and developed at the local level, schools and in joint programs between the health sector, education sector and Youth Union organizations.
