This year's Wimbledon women's doubles final features three former WTA world number 1 doubles players: Hsieh Su-wei, Barbora Strycova and Elise Mertens.
Despite being unseeded at Wimbledon this time, the veteran duo of Hsieh and Strycova took just 1 hour and 51 minutes to defeat the third seeds Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens with a score of 7-5, 6-4 in the final on Centre Court. Thereby, becoming the 2023 Wimbledon women's doubles champions.
This is the second Wimbledon doubles title Hsieh and Strycova have won together, having previously teamed up and won the tournament in 2019.
Hsieh and Strycova, both 37, are the oldest pair (74) to reach a Grand Slam doubles final, let alone win a title. They beat Liezel Huber, 35, and Lisa Raymond, 38, who were 73 when they won the 2011 US Open.
This is a well-deserved result for both of their efforts to return to the top. Previously, Barbora Strycova had taken a two-year break from competition after giving birth in 2021. Her partner Hsieh Su-wei also missed the entire 2022 season.
They only returned from the Hologic WTA Tour Madrid in April before heading to Wimbledon 2023. But just three months later, Hsieh and Strycova became Grand Slam champions.
For Hsieh, this is her second consecutive Grand Slam title in 2023, after Roland Garros with Wang Xinyu. To date, the Taiwanese player has won 6 Grand Slam women's doubles titles in her career, 4 of which came at Wimbledon. Including the 2021 Wimbledon championship with this year's opponent Elise Mertens, the 2013 Wimbledon championship and the 2014 Roland Garros championship with Peng Shuai.
