Watch 5 is the newest and most advanced smartwatch model of Huawei that has just been launched in Vietnam, for the first time with a 42 mm watch face size version for women or men with small wrists, in addition to the traditional 46 mm size. It comes with many different strap and color options for users to easily coordinate and personalize.
When holding the Watch 5 in hand, users can easily notice the curved glass design that seamlessly blends with the body, inspired by the “Kármán line” - the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. The 3D curved Sapphire glass not only increases durability, but also brings a deep visual effect, creating a more luxurious and comfortable feeling than a regular flat-faced watch.
The small details are also carefully taken care of. The two familiar positions on the right side of the body are the rotating crown located above, now improved for a smooth rotation feeling, precise tactile feedback, making it easy to navigate the interface. The function buttons are beveled and can be customized.
Huawei Watch 5 comes in 4 colors: Black, Purple for the 46mm version and White, Beige for the 42mm version. Curved sapphire glass is equipped for both versions. The 46mm version is made from aerospace-grade titanium alloy. Meanwhile, the 42mm version is made from 904L stainless steel, similar to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch.
This division helps users have the right choice according to their needs and spending, while affirming Huawei's diverse production capacity. Along with that, these materials make the Watch 5 a luxury fashion accessory with long-term use value and high durability.
The purple 46mm Watch 5 (titanium case) version used in this article weighs nearly 82 grams, lighter than the previously released Watch GT 5 Pro model of the same material. Thanks to that, it feels much more comfortable to wear (partly thanks to the reasonable curvature of the mount and glass, frame), suitable for exercise and wearing at work or for meeting friends.
"Clinic" on the wrist
Considered the “technology heart” of the model launched in May, X-Tap is a complex sensor module - a major step forward for Huawei in “reading” users’ health indicators. X-Tap consists of 3 separate sensors: a 10-level pressure sensor, a glass-covered ECG (electrocardiogram) electrode and an optical PPG sensor. Measuring the index from the fingertips will bring more scientifically accurate results because this area has a dense capillary network, the optical signal is clearer than the wrist, which can be affected by a number of factors such as arm hair, tattoos, width/tightness of the strap, etc.
X-Tap is very simple to combine: Users touch and hold the tip of their index finger on the sensor on the side of the device for 3 seconds to quickly launch the Health Glance feature, then follow the device's instructions to conduct a 60-second measurement process that brings back the results of 11 important indicators including: Electrocardiogram (ECG), blood oxygen concentration (SpO2), heart rate variability (HRV - a new and important indicator), skin temperature, stress level, arterial stiffness, respiratory overview...
The actual experience of this process is very intuitive. After activation, the watch will display clear instructions on the screen: Ask the user to hold the finger still for the first 30 seconds to measure the ECG, then continue to hold to measure other indicators, and finally cough 3 times into the watch's microphone to analyze the respiration. The whole process is seamless and ends with an easy-to-understand summary report right on the watch screen and in the Huawei Health app. This operation is much shorter than opening each software to measure specific indicators.
Although it has high accuracy and is relatively similar to specialized measuring devices, users need to understand that this is not a medical device, the results are for reference only. Health Glance does not replace a professional medical team but only aims to help users recognize abnormal fluctuations in their body. The data provided by the system will be the basis for comparison and provided to medical professionals when necessary.
eSIM, HarmonyOS and battery
Watch 5 supports eSIM in Vietnam, can be used by attaching a secondary eSIM to the main number on the phone (using the same subscription, package) or assigning an independent number. This helps users reduce dependence on the phone when exercising, forgetting the smartphone at home or going out for a short time without worrying about missing out on contact.
The device also has the ability to access the internet directly (mobile network or Wi-Fi 6) to use some map features, navigation, weather, etc., helping the device operate independently from the phone. The actual experience of listening and calling on Watch 5 is good, the speaker and microphone both work clearly, loud enough in the room environment, if on the street it will be a bit difficult to hear due to high traffic density.
Regarding the HarmonyOS operating system, smoothness is the first advantage to mention, followed by a highly aesthetic interface, rich and detailed icons, which can be said to have made good use of the accompanying AMOLED screen. AppGallery is also used independently on Watch 5, so users can quickly download software such as minigames, and even watch TikTok.
Scrolling, grids, and navigation are all fine in the latest version of the software. But HarmonyOS’s weakness so far is its lack of diversity in the third-party app ecosystem, even though most users don’t care about installing more apps to use on the watch’s already small screen.
Battery life will be an advantage of Watch 5 compared to competitors on the market today when having to charge daily or less than 2 days each time.
In fact, with daily use, receiving notifications, tracking exercise for about 30-60 minutes, occasionally measuring body index, turning on the AOD screen (Always On Display standby mode), not opening the eSIM, the 46mm Watch 5 can operate for about 3 days on a full charge. Turning off AOD and using the interface with power consumption level 1 or 2 can help the device last up to 4-5 days. Huawei also added 2 modes: Standard and Power Saving for Watch 5 to suit usage needs. In power saving mode, the device can operate for more than 1 week, but usually fluctuates around less than 10 days.
Who is Huawei Watch 5 suitable for?
Overall, the Watch 5 has an impressive design and materials in the high-end segment, impressing with its screen and health care features as well as the ability to operate independently from the phone. This device is suitable for users who prioritize design, quality of construction and are interested in a series of in-depth health index capture capabilities. In addition, Huawei's smartwatch has also been the choice of those who are afraid of daily battery charging since its launch on the market.
Watch 5 also has the advantage of not being “nailed” to any mobile operating system, compatible with both Android and iOS and can be easily switched back and forth. Active users, who are passionate about swimming and diving can also confidently choose this product because the device has its own suitable features such as depth sensor, displaying real-time diving information on the screen...
But if you are someone who has invested in another company's ecosystem, or prefers to install third-party software, you will find it a bit difficult to use the Watch 5. Another temporary weakness of the model is that although it has NFC and supports integrated entry/exit cards (elevators, parking lots, etc.), the feature of assigning payment cards on the watch is not available.
