Faced with the outbreak of swine streptococcus disease, many people in Hue city have become worried, cautious and have limited their purchases of pork sold in traditional markets.
Pork purchasing power drops due to concerns about swine streptococcus disease
On July 16, Mr. Nguyen Le Tam, deputy director in charge of the Hue City Center for Disease Control, said that in just the past month and a half, Hue recorded 32 cases of streptococcus suis, including 1 death and 3 cases of severe illness.
From July 11 to July 16, 5 more people in the city were infected with streptococcus suis, bringing the total number of people infected with the disease in this locality in 2025 to 38.
Faced with the complicated situation of streptococcus suis disease, many people in Hue are worried and hesitant to buy pork for their daily meals.
The sharp decrease in the number of buyers has caused many pork vendors at the market to choose to "hang up their stalls" and temporarily stop selling.
At Ben Ngu market (Thuan Hoa ward, Hue city), many traders said that the number of customers has decreased sharply in the past 10 days. With no buyers, many traders have abandoned their stalls, "hung up their stalls", temporarily stopped selling and waited for the situation to stabilize before reopening their stalls.

Hue issues official dispatch requesting to stop illegal pig transportation
Faced with the complicated situation of swine streptococcus disease, the People's Committee of Hue City has issued a dispatch requesting the veterinary sector to inspect the prevention and control of animal diseases, especially blue ear disease and African swine fever.
The City Steering Committee for Anti-Smuggling, Trade Fraud and Counterfeit Goods (Steering Committee 389) is required to increase patrols and controls to prevent, promptly detect and strictly handle subjects illegally transporting pigs and pork from abroad into the city.
Hue City Police are also required to investigate, monitor the situation, and update the list of subjects showing signs of trading, transporting, and slaughtering sick and dead pigs to take timely preventive measures.
Use meat properly, don't panic
According to Mr. Nguyen Le Tam, there is an "unusual" factor in controlling swine streptococcus disease that has caused many people to be hospitalized in Hue. That is, although Hue has recorded dozens of hospitalizations due to swine streptococcus, up to now, there has been no record of a major outbreak of diseases such as blue ear disease, African swine fever, etc. occurring in the local pig herd.
Meanwhile, in two neighboring localities, Da Nang and Quang Tri, there have been recorded outbreaks of African swine fever in pig herds, causing thousands of sick pigs to die.
"To prevent streptococcus suis, people need to thoroughly cook food related to pork. Do not eat blood pudding of animals because there is a risk of mixing it with pig blood.
In particular, you should not eat raw meat or products made from raw pork. When slaughtering or preparing pork, you should wear gloves and wash your hands with antibacterial soap.
People should not panic or worry too much, leading to not choosing pork in their daily meals. Just follow the regulations and instructions in preventing and fighting swine streptococcus disease of the Ministry of Health to prevent this disease," said Mr. Tam.
