( Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Many fishermen have applied technology in fishing, helping to improve fishing efficiency, moving towards a sustainable and modern fishing industry.
INCREASE FISHING PRODUCTIVITY
Fisherman Nguyen Gia Vien, in Tay An Hai village (Ly Son) is one of the pioneers in applying modern technologies to fishing. Mr. Vien's fishing boat QNg 96815 TS with a capacity of 800CV has been equipped with a horizontal detector, a camera, and a flow meter. In addition, to save fuel and attract fish, Mr. Vien has switched from fluorescent lights to LED lights for night net fishing.

Mr. Vien said that the horizontal detector is an advanced device with a detection radius of 2,000m, helping to control the water area around the ship and detect schools of fish far away from the ship. The camera can scan the signal widely and deeply, helping fishermen detect schools of fish in many different locations, at the same time predicting the fish yield and knowing the type of fish. Thanks to that, it helps fishermen proactively set up the right type of net for each type of fish.
For the current detector, it helps the captain recognize bad water areas, obstacles to avoid or identify water areas that cannot be fished. This saves time and effort. “My fellow shipmates and I pooled capital to buy a transducer for more than 1.6 billion VND, a camera for nearly 1.7 billion VND, and a current meter for nearly 600 million VND. Thanks to these modern fishing devices, my fishing boat no longer has to grope around to find fish streams like before; productivity and output have increased by 1.5 - 2 times compared to before using these devices. On average, each year, my boat catches 400 - 500 tons of various types of fish. In good years, the seafood output reaches 700 - 800 tons, bringing in an income of 200 - 300 million VND/person/year for the shipmates,” Mr. Vien added.
In recent years, fishermen in Ly Son district have boldly invested in modern equipment to serve fishing and ensure safety at sea. In addition, many ship owners have also invested in storage tanks using PU technology, helping to preserve seafood well after exploitation, increasing economic value.
FISHERMEN NEED SUPPORT
Fishing grounds are narrowing, aquatic resources are increasingly declining. Therefore, the application of modern technology in aquatic exploitation is very necessary. The fisheries sector encourages fishermen to boldly apply new technology in aquatic exploitation, improve fishing efficiency, and move towards sustainable and modern fisheries. Head of the provincial Fisheries Department Nguyen Van Muoi said that the annual increase in aquatic exploitation output is thanks to fishermen boldly investing in boats, increasing capacity, and applying advanced exploitation technologies such as 4-shaft trawl nets, rough trawl nets, tuna fishing with light, using LED lights to replace fluorescent and incandescent lamps.
In particular, the application of horizontal detectors, cameras, radars, seawater filters into fresh water, positioning devices... The application of modern technology and machinery to seafood fishing has brought about clear results. However, currently in our province, the number of ships equipped with modern machinery is still limited. The reason is that the cost of investing in equipment is too high, so many ship owners do not have the conditions. Therefore, the relevant authorities need to study and have policies to support fishermen in installing modern equipment, helping offshore fishing vessels to improve fishing efficiency, towards a sustainable and modern fishery.
FILTER SEAWATER INTO FRESHWATER With the typical fishing time at sea lasting nearly 3 months, each trip out to sea, each ship must prepare tens of thousands of liters of water for drinking and cooking. However, the reserve of fresh water is still not enough to serve the daily life of fishermen at sea. Based on the actual needs, in recent years, offshore squid fishing boats in Binh Chanh commune (Binh Son) have invested in machines to filter seawater into fresh water. Fisherman Nguyen Tu, owner of the QNg 95456 TS boat, in My Tan village, Binh Chanh commune, shared that on average, each squid fishing boat carries 25-50 people, so it is impossible to bring enough water to drink during several months of fishing at sea. Therefore, I invested 120 million VND to buy a machine to filter seawater into fresh water. Thanks to the water filter, there is no fear of running out of fresh water during the days of fishing at sea. On each trip, we do not have to struggle to transport fresh water onto the boat. The entire Binh Chanh commune currently has nearly 70 squid fishing boats in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, returning once every 3 months. All squid fishing boats are equipped with machines to filter seawater into fresh water. |
