The 37th meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) took place from May 22-26 in Bali, chaired by Indonesian Representative to the AICHR Wahyuningrum with the participation of representatives of countries at the AICHR and Timor Leste as observers.
The meeting provided updates on recent human rights developments in the region, including new laws and regulations at the national level, and heard presentations on human rights initiatives from representatives of Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Delegates discussed the implementation of AICHR's priority programs and activities, focusing on business and human rights, environment and climate change, the right to education, the rights of persons with disabilities, the rights of children and women, misinformation, incitement to hatred and human rights, protection of victims from extremism and violence, prevention of torture, etc.
In preparation for the annual meeting between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and AICHR in July, the meeting discussed the draft AICHR Report 2023, the AICHR Statement at the Meeting with ASEAN Foreign Ministers, and the AICHR's priority programmes and activities for the coming year.
Delegates also discussed preparations for the AICHR-UN Human Rights Dialogue, the AICHR visit to Switzerland, and the 5th ASEAN-European Union (EU) Human Rights Policy Dialogue.
Within the framework of the 37th meeting, AICHR met with the ASEAN Senior Officials Responsible for Information (SOMRI) represented by Vietnam to discuss priorities and initiatives related to human rights, information and communication; met with representatives of the ASEAN University Network for Human Rights Education (AUN HRE) to discuss cooperation in promoting human rights and peace in higher education in Southeast Asia...
