Just when the market seemed to have calmed down, Intel suddenly returned to the spotlight with its 18A chip production process. The technology is expected to bring the company back on track with TSMC and Samsung. According to information from Taiwan's Commercial Times, many of the world's leading corporations in the field of ASIC (application-specific integrated circuits) such as Nvidia, Broadcom, Alchip and IBM are testing sample chips using the 18A process.
Initial evaluations show positive results. The line has the potential to be commercialized in large-scale orders.
18A is an advanced semiconductor manufacturing process that Intel has high expectations for. According to the plan, the company will use this technology for its customers and its own products. The goal is that 70% of the chips produced by Intel in the future will use internal processes, instead of outsourcing.
The Nova Lake generation will be the first to integrate 18A technology, combining chips manufactured by TSMC and Intel.
The 18A process has now entered the risk production phase. The specifications have been finalized. The customer validation results are “encouraging.” Intel is ramping up capacity, aiming for mass production in the second half of this year.
As global geopolitics make chip supply chains increasingly vulnerable, Intel has emerged as a safe option for US tech companies looking to reduce their dependence on Taiwan-based TSMC.
Intel’s “Made in America, Serve the World” strategy has attracted major customers back to the negotiating table. The company has advanced technology and an expanding factory network. The company will be a new rival to TSMC in the chip foundry market in the near future.
However, the first quarter financial report shows that Intel is still having problems with revenue and investments. Many sources say that the American chip company will have to lay off up to 20,000 employees in the near future.
