How expensive will the iPhone 17 be?

Based on constantly changing tax policies and the pricing trends of previous models, the iPhone 17 could be the most expensive iPhone ever.

From rumors about an ultra-thin design to significant upgrades in memory and camera, the iPhone 17 is receiving a lot of attention from the global tech community. However, amidst all the speculation about new features, the most frequently asked question remains: "How much will the upcoming iPhone cost?"

How much will tariffs increase the price of the iPhone 17?

Amidst US President Donald Trump's continued tough trade policies, it is highly likely that new tariffs could significantly increase iPhone prices. Recently, Trump announced on social media that he would impose a 25% tariff on all iPhones manufactured outside the United States. A specific timeframe for the implementation of this tariff has yet to be announced.

Currently, all imports into the US are subject to a basic tariff of 10%. For goods from China, this tariff is 30%. However, both tariffs could increase in July if the tariff deferral agreements expire. This could lead to a significant price increase for the iPhone 17.

Previously, Apple avoided many of the impacts of the initial tariffs by stockpiling large quantities of phones before the tariffs were implemented. Additionally, Trump's initial list of tariff exemptions included many tech products such as smartphones and laptops, a large proportion of which were Apple products.

Over the past few years, the American corporation has also shifted part of its iPhone production line from China to India, which currently has lower tariffs. However, Mr. Trump has publicly called on CEO Tim Cook to bring the entire production process back to the US. Experts believe this is almost impossible in the short term, due to the high labor and production costs in the US. According to some estimates, an iPhone manufactured entirely in the US could cost up to $3,500 .

The Trump administration called the list of tax exemptions “temporary” in early April and stated that these incentives would end in “one to two months.” Simultaneously, also in April, Trump indicated he would move semiconductors to a “different tax group.” However, details regarding the timing or rate of the new tariffs have yet to be released.

If the tariff deferral agreements end as planned, import tariffs from India will increase from 10% to 26% in July. For goods from China, tariffs could skyrocket from 30% to as much as 145% in August.

Experts believe that while the tax increase doesn't necessarily mean an increase in iPhone prices, it will certainly have some impact. Furthermore, the location of iPhone assembly is only part of the equation. Apple uses components from dozens of different countries. Every change in tariffs can affect production costs.

Will older iPhone models increase in price as well?

Previously, the American tech giant rarely publicly linked price increases to tariffs or politics, partly to avoid direct confrontation with figures like Mr. Trump. The president has been sharply critical of retailers like Walmart and Amazon for mentioning tariff-related price increases.

Instead, if there are any price adjustments, the corporation will likely cite reasons such as feature upgrades or design costs. According to the Wall Street Journal , despite the impact of taxes, Apple plans to raise iPhone prices this year.

According to Cnet , it has been 5 years since Apple last increased the price of the basic iPhone model. Typically, Apple increases the price of iPhones by about $50-$150 every 5 years. If we apply this trend to the current price of the iPhone 16 ( $799 ), it is very likely that the iPhone 17 will be priced between $850-$950 .

Initially, many rumors suggested that the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air would be even more expensive than the iPhone Pro. However, according to Bloomberg , the device could be priced around $900 , equivalent to the current iPhone 16 Plus. However, these figures don't account for the potential impact of tariffs, especially if the product is still manufactured in China or India.

A common strategy for saving money when buying an iPhone is to choose an older model. However, if the iPhone 17 launches at a significantly higher price, demand for older iPhone models may increase, driving up their prices as well. Conversely, if you already own an older iPhone, its value may also increase in the used market.

Even if Apple doesn't directly increase the price of new iPhones, they can still offset the increased costs by raising the prices of other services, such as Apple Music, Apple News, or iCloud storage plans.

"We'll see the first increases in the subscription services sector, as they'll likely appear smaller. Consumers will still pay, it just won't feel the impact immediately," said supply chain expert Joe Hudicka.
