(CLO) The Israeli Air Force announced on October 30 that it had attacked targets in the Syrian capital Damascus, targeting important infrastructure believed to belong to Hezbollah in this neighboring country.

According to the Israeli military statement, Hezbollah has an independent intelligence branch in Syria, including a separate information collection, coordination and evaluation network.

Earlier, the Syrian Defense Ministry said Israel had attacked civilian areas south of the capital, causing some damage. Syria's state news agency, SANA, said the airstrike targeted the Sayeda Zeinab area. The area has been the target of previous attacks.

Israel has stepped up airstrikes in Syria since Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, especially after the Israel-Hezbollah conflict escalated.

Although Israel does not typically comment on airstrikes, Syrian and Western intelligence sources say Israeli strikes in Syria have inflicted casualties on Hezbollah fighters and militias in the eastern and southern suburbs of Damascus.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, calling Israeli airstrikes on civilian areas a "criminal act" and calling on UN members to take urgent action to "stop Israeli attacks" and hold them accountable.
