It is the worst fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza in months, with at least 10 civilians – mostly women and children – among those killed. The fighting is now in its fourth day.

Palestinian militants continued to fire rockets into Israel throughout Thursday. Israel’s MADA rescue service said a rocket hit an apartment complex in the central city of Rehovot, killing a 70-year-old man. They said four others were wounded.
The Israeli military said more than 500 rockets were fired toward Israel from the Gaza Strip, adding that most were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system or fell in open areas.
Most of the rockets launched into Israel hit empty buildings because Israeli residents in danger zones had left the area. But three occupied buildings were hit in the southern town of Sderot on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Early Thursday, the Israeli military also stepped up attacks against Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip and said a senior commander in charge of the group's rocket launchers, Ali Ghali, was killed when his apartment was hit by a rocket.
Late Thursday, Israel said it had killed another Jihad commander who was expected to replace Ghali in southern Gaza. Jihad identified Ahmed Abu Daqqa as one of its commanders.
A total of 30 people have been killed since the renewed fighting, the Gaza Health Ministry said. Late Thursday, three Palestinians, including two children aged 8 and 16, were reported killed when “homemade rockets” fired by the Islamic Jihad group missed and landed in Gaza. Another 26 people were wounded in the incidents.
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between the sides were still underway on Thursday with the Jihad group's top member, Mohamad al-Hindi, arriving in Cairo to discuss details.
According to Israeli media, a delegation of Egyptian mediators has also arrived in Israel. However, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that “our best efforts have not yet yielded the desired results.”
