Israel claims it can defeat Iran's hypersonic missiles

Defense Minister Gallant affirmed that Israel always has solutions to deal with all types of Iranian weapons, after Tehran launched a hypersonic missile.

"I have heard the enemy boasting about the weapons they are developing," Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on June 6 during a visit to the Northern Command of the IDF. "For any such weapon, we always have better countermeasures, both defensively and offensively," Gallant said.

Mr. Gallant affirmed that the IDF is capable of protecting the Israeli people and "dealing a fatal blow to the enemy if they launch a war against us".

Gallant's comments came after Iran unveiled the Fattah hypersonic missile, which has a range of 1,400 km and can reach a maximum speed of Mach 14 (14 times the speed of sound, equivalent to 15,000 km/h). Iranian media reported that the Fattah missile can penetrate US and Israeli ballistic missile defense systems, including Iron Dome.

Hypersonic weapons, including missiles and glide vehicles, can fly at speeds of at least Mach 5. They are often described as "invisible" weapons due to their very high flight speeds and ability to maneuver along complex trajectories, allowing them to evade most current missile defense systems.

The IDF Northern Command on June 6 held two separate division-level exercises, including a scenario of the air force launching strategic strikes deep into enemy territory in a total war, and simulated naval attacks and defenses.

The drills come amid heightened tensions in the region over Iran's nuclear program. Tehran has stepped up its nuclear and missile programs since the United States unilaterally withdrew from the 2018 nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions.

Israel fears that talks to revive the deal could legitimize Iran’s nuclear program, and Israeli officials have warned of the risk of a major regional conflict over the issue.
