James Cameron has ideas for final 2 'Avatar' movies but won't direct

The Oscar-winning director is in post-production on Avatar 3 and still has about half of Avatar 4 to shoot. That means Disney already has three Avatar sequels on its release schedule. The future of Avatar 5 is taking shape in Cameron's mind.

"We've finished the script for season 5 and I've got ideas for season 6 and 7, although I probably won't be directing those, but I mean I'm enjoying what's happening. I love the process and I love working with great people," he said.

However, it's clear that the Avatar series will continue even without Cameron in the director's chair.

As for fans who aren't too keen on the idea that Cameron's career is being completely dominated by the series, the Titanic director said: "People always ask us, 'Why do you keep doing the same project?'... But when you have the ability to connect with people, why waste that? Why would I start doing something else that I might not connect with?"

Zoe Saldaña, who will return as lead character Neytiri, said she could only reveal that the film gets "crazier" as it goes on.

" Avatar 3 is going to be amazing, and 4 and 5 are going to be insane," Saldaña added, jokingly. "It really is. James Cameron blew us away. This is his signature. We all thought it was Titanic, but it turns out Avatar is the real legacy. For us, being a part of something so groundbreaking and pioneering is like a legacy in itself. So I'm excited to be back. We're back next week, so I can't wait to see everyone."

Cameron "revealed" in an interview with People magazine last year that Avatar 4 would involve a time jump for the characters. He intentionally filmed Avatar 3 and parts of Avatar 4 at the same time as part 2 , The Way of Water, to ensure continuity in age between the characters.

Cameron talks about the time jump in Avatar 4 : "We'll see them and the time jump starts six years before they come back."

Avatar 3 Avatar 4 was originally scheduled to be released in 2024, but Disney delayed it to December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2029, followed by Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031. Based on this timeline, the final Avatar film will be released 22 years after the first film in 2009.

Saldaña humorously posted on her Instagram after announcing the release date change last year: "Awesome! I'll be 53 when the last Avatar comes out. You know, I was 27 when I shot the first one."

Producer Jon Landau said in an interview with Empire magazine last year that Avatar 3 would introduce the Ashes, described as "an aggressive volcanic race" led by the Varang, played by Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter Oona Chaplin.

Landau also said at the time: "There are always good people as well as bad people. The Na'vi are no exception. Usually, people don't see themselves as bad. What is the underlying cause that makes us bad? Maybe there are factors that we can't reveal yet."

Landau also told Gizmodo last year that Avatar 5 will bring the series to Earth for the first time. "We're bringing the Na'vi here to open their eyes, to open Neytiri's eyes, to what exists on Earth," he said.
