Jennifer Lopez reveals reason for breaking off engagement with Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez opened up about the challenging times with her current husband Ben Affleck, according to People .

In an interview with Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe on February 14, the Hustlers actress (54 years old) recalled how she and the Pearl Harbor star (51 years old) called off their first wedding in September 2003, nearly two decades before they remarried.

"We didn't break up right away. It happened over the next few months. Because what Ben did made me question our relationship. Deep down I knew I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life. But it seemed like we couldn't do it at that time," Jennifer Lopez explained about her official split from Ben Affleck in January 2004.

Lopez met Affleck in 2002 while filming the film Gigli , saying they were not "mature enough" to figure out their relationship.

"Even though he was in his late 20s and I was in my early 30s, neither of us were ready for a relationship," Lopez explained. After their split, she married singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares 15-year-old twins Max and Emme. Lopez and Anthony split in 2011, after seven years of marriage.

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck married Jennifer Garner in 2005. The couple had three children: Violet (18 years old), Seraphina (15 years old) and Samuel (11 years old) before splitting in 2015.

Jennifer Lopez continued to tell Zane Lowe: "We were apart. We both found other people, had beautiful children, and even had new relationships until we both met again."

She and Ben Affleck reunited in 2021 and got married in a surprise in Las Vegas the following year. At the premiere of This Is Me… Now: A Love Story in Los Angeles on February 13, Jennifer Lopez got emotional while talking about Ben Affleck before the screening.

"He's the one who inspired me in acting, inspired me throughout my life. I said, 'I love you, thank you for believing in me and helping me believe in myself, helping me grow every day,'" Jennifer Lopez confided.
