According to local residents, the anti-erosion embankment system in My Thuy village, Hai An commune, although put into use just over a year ago, has now suffered serious erosion, affecting a number of households living next to the embankment and a large aquaculture area of the villagers.

Following the instructions of the local people, the reporter went to the construction site. With the naked eye, it can be seen that many sections of the embankment have seriously collapsed, and sections of the concrete embankment on both sides of the construction have been pulled down to the water's edge.

The concrete tie rod system above the embankment body and below the embankment bottom in many sections has shifted and collapsed 50 cm - 1 m from the road surface. The concrete ball culvert system designed to withstand water pressure at the foot of the embankment has also shifted in many places, in some places many ball pipes have come loose in the middle of the canal.

Mr. Phan Thanh Hoi (67 years old) lives next to the anti-erosion embankment in My Thuy village. Recently, Mr. Phan Thanh Hoi (67 years old) has been extremely worried because the landslide is only about 2 meters away from his house.

Mr. Hoi said that the embankment was put into use near the rainy season, so the canal bed received a large amount of water from Hai Binh commune. According to him, because the canal bed was narrow, the water flowed rapidly and swirled, affecting the bottom layer, causing erosion, leading to the braces, concrete culvert system and the canal roof being eroded, shifted, sunk and washed away.

“My house is right next to the corner of My Thuy bridge and the bend of the canal, so the water flows very fast. I realized that the situation was not good, so I dumped several large trucks of rocks at the eddy corner to limit the landslide. If I hadn’t done that, the landslide would have entered my garden by now. The landslide was most severe during the flood season last year, when the water flowed very fast, covering almost the same surface as the canal and swept away the sand at the bottom very strongly,” said Mr. Hoi.

Mr. Hoi said that before the canal was built, the canal was naturally made of sand, and wild pineapple trees were planted on both sides to hold the soil very well, so there was no landslide. According to him, if the authorities do not fix it soon, he will take wild pineapple trees to plant in the landslide areas to ensure the safety of his garden.

The My Thuy village anti-erosion embankment system project with a total investment of more than 3.3 billion VND is an agricultural and rural development project/level III. The project is 307.78 m long; the top of the embankment is 2.5 m wide, filled with 3-graded soil K90; the embankment height is 2.5 m; the slope of the embankment slope is 1:1, reinforced with M250 concrete slabs, 1x2 stones 6 cm thick, combined with longitudinal and horizontal bracing of M250 BTXM, 1x2 stones reinforced with CT3 steel. The contractor for the project is a joint venture of Hai Trieu Company Limited and Quang Vu Construction Company Limited. The project started on July 10, 2023, and was completed and put into use on September 29, 2023.

A short distance away, Mr. Vo Trung Tuyen (64 years old), an aquaculture farmer, expressed his concern when looking at the severely damaged embankment that encroached on his pond and many other households' ponds. "My brothers and I are currently raising silver pomfret, shrimp, and snails in many ponds with a total area of about 5,000 m2 .

But the current landslide situation of the canal makes us very worried, the landslide point is only about 3 meters away from the lake. The embankment has sunk quite deeply in many places, the tie bar has sunk down a meter, so we are very worried that it will threaten to break the lake in the near future. Although we are very determined to raise aquatic products to improve our economic life, the current state of damage to the embankment makes us very worried," said Mr. Tuyen.

To temporarily fix the problem, he hired a truck to fill in the heavily eroded area near the pond area with sand, hoping to ensure more safety. Meanwhile, Mr. Vo Viet Minh, who has 3 ponds for aquaculture in the area near the embankment, is also worried at this time. He said he rented an old pond from the people, then renovated it and started raising aquatic animals 2 years ago.

“My family has only raised a few crops, and the profit is not much, but now seeing the canal erosion getting worse, I am very worried. If the authorities do not quickly fix the erosion of this canal, the upcoming flood season will cause strong water flow and erosion, causing a very high risk of aquaculture ponds collapsing,” Mr. Minh said.

According to the report of Hai An Commune People's Committee, from November 1 to November 5, 2024, there was very heavy rain in the commune, along with the amount of water flowing from the canals, which damaged a number of embankments in the area. In particular, the anti-erosion embankment system in My Thuy village was severely damaged in 3 sections with a total area of 1,575 m2 .

In addition, the embankment built many years ago in Thuan Dau village was also severely damaged in 3 sections with an area of 134.5 m2. The estimated damage caused by landslides on both canals is nearly 2 billion VND. Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hai An commune Nguyen Thanh Vu said: After the embankment collapsed, the local government conducted a survey of the scene, measured the volume of landslides and reported to superiors to find a solution to ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season. "The locality proposed a plan to concretize the canal bed to stop erosion caused by the flow. We hope that competent authorities will pay attention and soon have a plan to overcome the landslide to ensure the safety of people's houses and aquaculture households in the area," said Mr. Vu.
