Following the draw against Brighton in the final round of the 2025/26 Premier League season on May 24th, Fernandes officially set a record of 21 assists in a single season. However, the Portuguese midfielder was unhappy when Keane criticized him on the show The Overlap , suggesting that the Manchester United captain prioritized individual contributions over team results.
Keane once said Fernandes had a "joke-like" mindset, after learning that the player admitted he prioritized creating chances over shooting. The former Manchester United captain believes that with that mindset, Fernandes will not be able to win major titles with the team.
On the podcast The Diary of a CEO , Fernandes responded forcefully. He asserted that Keane had completely misinterpreted his statement and called it an "unacceptable lie."
"I always accept criticism. But I don't like it when someone puts things I haven't said into my mouth," Fernandes shared.
The 31-year-old midfielder said he even asked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get Keane's phone number so they could talk privately, instead of making the matter public.
According to Fernandes, what he really said after the Brighton game was that there are times when you should pass instead of shooting, not that prioritizing the assist record was the way Keane interpreted it.

However, Keane quickly responded on Instagram . The former Irish star posted a picture of a donkey standing under the spotlight, with two lions in the shadows behind it, and the caption: "Too much attention makes the donkey think it's a lion."
Although Fernandes wasn't mentioned directly, many fans believe this was a sarcastic remark aimed at the current Manchester United captain.
In recent years, Keane, along with other members of the "Class of '92" such as Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, frequently criticized Manchester United's performance and fighting spirit.
Fernandes is not the first player to react to comments from former club legends.
Nevertheless, the Portuguese midfielder emphasized that he always respected Keane for his immense contributions to Manchester United.
