VHO - Faced with the current state of degradation and the need to preserve and promote values associated with tourism development, at a recent workshop, many experts and scientists proposed solutions to preserve and promote the value of the relic cluster of Tram Pagoda - Tram Gian Pagoda (Chuong My district, Hanoi).
The scientific workshop "Preserving and promoting the value of the national relic cluster of Tram Pagoda and Tram Gian Pagoda" was organized by the People's Committee of Chuong My district in coordination with the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, the Vietnam Historical Science Association and the National Cultural Heritage Council. Affirming the special values of the relic cluster, many scientists frankly said that the failure to exploit the value of the relic cluster of Tram Pagoda and Tram Gian Pagoda is a waste of a valuable resource. Due to the influence of time and historical factors, the relic cluster is currently in a state of degradation. Historical researcher Le Van Lan emphasized that it is necessary to urgently carry out the initial restoration and improvement of the degradation at this relic cluster.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Van Bai stated: “After many historical changes, the current state of the relic cluster is no longer intact as when it was first built or at its most complete. The most urgent requirement is to have a more in-depth research program to clearly identify the typical values of the relic, at the same time creating a basis for interpreting the relic through mass media as well as applying modern technical achievements so that local people and tourists can absorb the cultural messages of their ancestors”. From the perspective of conservation associated with tourism development, Mr. Bai noted the value of Buddhist cultural heritage associated with spiritual tourism in the relic cluster of Tram Gian Pagoda - Tram Pagoda. “The objects exploited in spiritual tourism are communal houses, temples, pagodas, shrines, churches... The relic cluster of Tram Gian Pagoda - Tram Pagoda is a typical case”, he said.
Affirming that the relic cluster of Tram Gian Pagoda - Tram Pagoda deserves to be recognized as a special national relic, according to Mr. Bai, in terms of tourism, no matter how much historical, cultural, scientific or architectural and artistic values it contains, this relic cluster only exists as a tourism resource. Therefore, in order to have quality tourism products and tours, first of all, there must be a master plan or project to preserve the original elements that make up the value of the relic cluster of Tram Gian Pagoda - Tram Pagoda. "Projects to preserve cultural heritage are associated with sustainable tourism development and must take the aspirations and needs of local people and tourists as the starting point. Cultural heritage must be protected and can only be protected when we know how to rely on the community, believe in the community and promote the strength of the local community as well as the monks who are in charge of the relic cluster", the Vice Chairman of the National Cultural Heritage Council added.
From the perspective of protecting the treasures in ancient temples, Dr. Pham Quoc Quan emphasized that the treasures in the two pagodas Tram Gian and Tram, together with Thay Pagoda (Quoc Oai district) and Tay Phuong Pagoda (Thach That district) have contributed to creating one of the "four great scenic spots" of the Doai region, which have long been recorded in the documents of Buddhist history and Vietnamese architecture and art, as national temples, on par with One Pillar Pagoda, Kim Lien, Phat Tich, Doi Son and many other ancient temples of the golden age of Dai Viet. However, Mr. Quan is concerned that despite their special values, both pagodas have not been fully exploited to become destinations for tourists, creating one of the strengths of the cultural industry. The workshop once again re-evaluated the comprehensive value of the two relics, to supplement and adjust them to suit reality, ensuring scientific and legal requirements, with the aim of promoting more positive effects after restoration and embellishment. That is a methodical and necessary approach.
“The story of preserving the treasures in the ancient temples in the relic cluster of Tram Pagoda and Tram Gian Pagoda does not have too many risks to be alarming. However, the Buddha statues, god statues, saint statues, mother statues... that have been damaged by new layers of paint being covered, losing the spirit, soul and original value of the treasures, need to be paid attention to,” said Dr. Pham Quoc Quan, emphasizing that to restore the original paint layer of the statue on the roof of a 17th century castle, only 70cm high, would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, the price in 1995. The expert expressed that he was extremely concerned about the Arhat and Ten Temple reliefs that had cracked and peeled off the lacquer, and that there needed to be a project included in the overall project “Restoration and embellishment of the relic cluster of Tram Pagoda - Tram Gian Pagoda” to be carried out in the future. It is also the desire to incorporate a project to restore the terracotta pedestal at Tram Gian Pagoda, to ensure objectivity and science.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Cong Viet, it is necessary to try to preserve the natural state, not allowing the destruction of hills, land, and filling in ponds and lakes for construction within the prescribed and planned scope. The renovation and upgrading of construction architecture as well as statues and artifacts must comply with general regulations. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the propaganda and promotion of the cultural heritage values of Tram Pagoda and Tram Gian Pagoda, meeting the needs of cultural tourism.
